Have a look at plastidip, probably cheaper than buying new wings in your colour of car.

I had thought about that but I think I'd be better getting two cheap ass wings and rattle can them. If I take my time and do tem when it's nice it should come out okay I reckon.

Sorry... Been busy with kiddies and day dreaming about ECU's and Looms!!

Right.. So, what these two are eluding to is, today's events!!

Pete and I had wanted to get our cars dynoed as Pete's was a shed last time and he had fixed it and I now have my new engine in and running as it should SO:

Last weekend I went up to my parents with Nic following my so she could watch my car and look for anything looking loose or wobbly... Only thing she spotted... Brake lights didn't work!!

This morning, I got out into the car armed with my trusty multimeter and some schematics for the wiring and traced the cables, all okay, checked the fuses, all okay... Pulled the brake switch out to check and found it was sticking so a strip down and clean up saw that problem solved.

Off up to EFi Parts in Runcorn to see Chris and throw the car on the dyno for a power run to check the engine health. Quick blast up to the unit and the car was feeling nice and strong. Pete's car went on first and I won't elude to what figures or anything as I will leave it for people to read his build thread to find out. Needless to say he was happy.

My turn. Now, being 100% honest, after the slight issues I had had, I was going to be happy with it just making it off the dyno with the engine still running!!

The car was setup and straight off the tacho wasn't working so we couldn't calibrate the rev's for the torque figures and exact peak power point but as I wasn't too fussed about the exact points Chris was happy to power on and do the runs.

Needless to say, the car blasted through the three runs without any issues. Even the fuelling was within the limits of what we wanted...

Not bad for a standard ECU and map running some Catcam 708's!!!

as for the final power figure.....

135.1BHP

Properly happy with that!!!

Next major upgrade has got to be a map! which leads me onto my next issue...

I know I will eventually get standalone but for now I would like to get the stock ECU mapped as I am not exactly swimming in cash at the minute! So I am asking you all... even if you just skim through this... advice please guys and girls on the following questions:

1. Anyone about that is north west based that can map stock ECU's and any idea on price.

2. Anyone want to donate an Omex 600 to me?

3. Anyone know of any source material for how to map these ECU's

Here is the print out from today.

Car on the Dyno:

So there we have it, I now have a caged and cammed track car. It has taken a while to get to this stage but I am so glad I finally got here. Next stop is going to get spendy but should be interesting to see what extra power can be eeked out of the engine.

Also, go to book a track day soon as possible.

Nice update Alan, glad it all went well today at EFI. You need to stop thinking your engine is about to blow up everytime it goes on a set of rollers.

We need to get a trackday book asap

I know mate lol. Feel a LOT better about it now. Especially after the long chat with Chris.

Really want to get it weighed soon as well.

I'm going to make a front to back list of little jobs that need doing to tidy it all up today, this will not only give me cheap little jobs to do of an evening etc but make me feel better and better about the car.

Get it on the scales at Oulton, but antiquated but work well!

For the numbers Chris was talking about yesterday, I'd say you'd be better going on a major diet (car not you ) if you're talking about going quicker, especially on track.

Say your car is 875kg, at 135bhp you're at 154bhp per ton.
Same weight at 145bhp=165bhppt.
Same bhp at 825kg=165bhppt.

Now I know that's using guesstimating but 10ponies will cost a shite load more than losing 50kg!

Yeah, i had a go on those scales a while back an i was sure i read them right bit the read at 750kg which was way under... Their is a scrap merchant round the corner from me so i'll jump on their scales and see what it reads.

I know i can get more weight out mostly from glass and sunroof at the minute but its pennies i havent got at the minute. Needs doing though.

Half the dash who needs a passenger side,
Window mechinism (get a manual system),
Remove sunroof and plate it (I found a sheet that I think is big enough in B&Q for £30ish)
Lexan rear windows,

This should see it down nicely, and remove any more spare cabling thats left in the car.

When we go out for the drive we can nip to a weigh bridge and get a printed reading.

Already have most of the weight out of the dash and I did remove the glove box finally the other day so that should be okay now. Their is probably a lot of excess wiring in the loom but I don't want to get into that too much until I either need to take the car off the road for a while again or unless I can find a spare full loom to work on.

Sunroof needs doing as do the rear windows and I was going to fit plastic fronts... I may keep a manual setup on the drivers side though lol.

To be honest the electric fronts are still in just because they are handy at the minute.

I didn't get time to do the list of jobs today as we went to a VW club meet with Nics car. Was a good day but meant nothing saxo related got done.

I'll try and get work at home this week if I can and do a few odd jobs in the evenings.

Default Alanapone's Red VTS. Car is home and in need of a few little jobs.

Half a dash? Who needs half a dash!!!

Now you're caged you need to get the angle grind out on the doors etc, if your doors support their own weight when you open them you haven't taken enough out!!!

I had considered that. It's just... How extreme do I want to go!?

If I go for super weight saving then I may as well go the whole hog and start making moulds for fibreglass body panels.

I would like to know what weight the car is now before getting to into the dieting. I know a few bits like the sunroof etc will all help with no drastic consequence though so thats doable. If I go polycarb windows then the lightweight doors are doable as I have doorbars on the cage and no need for the internals.

I guess like you said, less weight is better power to weight and for free for the most part!

I found this today which I thought was pretty cool lol.

http://westfield-world.com/power-to-weight.html

Gives you an idea of what you can go up against lol.

That is very cool just did mine and its surprising what you can go up against, and when you do on a track day its also surprising how shite the drivers in them are!!

Yeah, pretty cool isn't it lol. I thought the same thing... although, i'm not a very good driver either so it all balances out!

Really need some more time behind the wheel and on track now.
