Day time photography advice?

i have been asked to go out with my new camera (nikon d40) tomorrow and get some good photos for presentation purposes of a college (external) and im just after some advice on the best way to go about taking good professional looking photos during the day! wenever i take day shots they end up just looking like i have used a point and shoot any advice would be greatly appreciated. like to wether i should use slow shutter fast shutter etc etc. ans whats best to get the nicest effects etc

shutter speed will be depeandant on the light available.

Aperture will be dependant on the shot you are taking.

There are no 'daytime settings' you just need to learn what settings you want for the type of shot you want.

Gordi, what type of shots are your college requiring?

People, urban landscapy, close up of litter? that sort of thing?

Probably the best way to get that 'professional' look without actually thinking about it is you lower the aperture to lowest you can possibly get. and get close as you can to something that you want to shoot.

probs the easiest, but without knowing what you're suppose to be shooting its.... a shot in the dark (punmaster!!!!!!!1 winnneer) at what settings you need.

Just of the buildings them selfs and surrounding areas! say like for a college brochure to show the campus. but wanting to concertrate on the buildings.
