Dont install norton, maybe i just had a bad experience but it slowed my PC down so much!

Get avg free, or the paid version if you want the extra features. I have used it for years and its never done me wrong.

malware bytes anti malware (FREE)

and

Microsoft security essentials (ALSO FREE)

Im an IT manager and I always advise these 2 peices of software, only drawback with malware bytes is that it doesnt have a real time scanner so therefore needs to be done regularly

Microsoft security essentials is good... malwarebytes is more a scanner so only works when you set routine scans etc... gives you no realtime protection but is the best for removing malware and spyware. AVG is prob the most popular. have a look on here for free software http://www.filehippo.com/

yeh stay away from mcafee and norton... aweful software!!!

I find that not using anything, keeps my PC running up to speed as I've used AVG, norton, kaspersky and Panda, and I've hated every single one and they've never done much good, and as far as I'm aware it's never been infected when I've not been using AV... I just use windows firewall, my router firewall, and I'm just cautious about what I download and which sites I go on... I think the main thing in protecting yourself is just being aware of what you're doing.

I had norton about 8 years ago, went AVG and never looked back. Norton loves using your memory and slows everything up, eveyrone i encounter with problems regarding speed i tell them to get rid of Norton completely from their system and either use AVG Free or pay for the full version.

Symantec's software I've always had problems with!

I use a combo of AVG (paid version) and Microsoft Security Essentials. Never have any problems at all

It does have a resident scanner if you pay for it or obtain a serial number for it.

Mine does anyway!
