Mazda RX-8 why so cheap ???
Playing the "what would you buy for £4k game" tonight (as you do) and I came across the Mazda RX-8. Seems like a lot of car for not a lot of money but why???
Anyone know why they're so cheap? I recall reading somewhere that they're not very economical but can't seem to find anything else negative about them (ignoring the "Mazda" part).
What do you reckon ??
This is the type of thing I'm talking about .... http://www.pistonheads.com/classifie...s-2004/1261203

Uneconomical, less hardy engines, bad road tax, expensive parts.

What do you mean "ignoring the Mazda part"?

Still for that price, with no road tax to pay over here and as a 4th car sounds like it could be a fun buy.... 2.6l and rear wheel drive - do they shift or is the power lost?

The barber that cuts my mullet has one - they shift apparently but as above, they cost a bomb to run and service, drink a fair bit of oil etc. I can't remember the exact cost he mentioned for them but spark plugs for them are VERY expensive - just had a quick look on ECP and it came up with NGK's @ £37 up to Denso's @ £42 EACH and that's without fitting them... I certainly wouldn't want to tackle a rotary engine
Just had a look at tax as well - a 2.6 is £490 to tax for the year - ouch!

I run a Hawkeye WRX so am used to high MPG and as stated there's no road tax to pay for me, just thought that you seemed to be getting a lot of "fun" car for the money. Over here they sell for a good few thousand more than UK prices so as long as it didn't go bang then I could probably buy one to play with for the summer and then sell it on at the same price I paid for it maybe a little bit more.
If it did go bang then I reckon there's more than £3k of salvageable parts which I could sell on then scrap the rest.
Food for thought me thinks

Insurance yes, but then I'm an old git and insurance is peanuts and I can just add another car to the policy. For example I pay 200€ fully comp for me and the misses (23 year old with license 18 months so she's still under the "A" scheme) on the Scooby
Carte Grise - only if I import it - I leave my cars on UK plates SORNed in the UK for as long as possible (Defender has been like that for 12 years now, lol). However CG are 50% reduced for cars over 10 years old - so it would be a one off payment of about 400€ on a 230bhp Mazda if I wanted to put it on French plates.

I don't think a RHD will be worth as much as a LHD in France. Plus UK cars are exposed to salty roads in the winter so are generally in a worse state and worth less.

With you on that - the RX-8 is just an idea for another car (have 5 at the moment) and a cheap bit of fun - I won't be selling any of the current line-up to replace with a Mazda.
