It's coming off quite easily on this one so I'd certainly say its just road dirt & grime. I use autosmart Tardis on the underside, its very effective. Once its all off I've given it a good wipe with quick detailer to clean any Tardis residue off as its strong stuff.

Certainly just seems like general grime on the XSi as its relatively easy to shift. The AX on the other hand was very thick & stubborn and took hours to remove so I suspect that there was a layer of under seal on that one.

2 hours well spent, carried on where I left off pretty much
After
And a few more
So that concludes the drivers side footwell area.
I've had another look at the abs system as to why the light is on. I'd already had a look and noticed that the abs sensors had been removed (possibly both broken) and that the main plug to the abs unit was also unplugged. It seems that this was most likely done when both driveshafts had been replaced as some wally has refitted non abs shafts. So I've got a few bits to source before the systems up and running again.

I'm surprised you bought it up that much in only 2hours! What are you using, a stiff brush and good products?

Amazingly its been easier cleaning the underside of this than it was my AX which had less than 1/3 of the mileage. I've used an old toothbrush, some baby wipes, autosmart Tardis on the stubborn bits and the less aggressive auto Glym intensive tar remover on the easier bits.
Seems to do the job quite well.

A little more progress made, this was my aim to get up to scratch today
Started by removing the arch liner, old discs and pads.
Typically the disc retaining screws were buggered, one sheared off immediately, the other was already snapped. Set about drilling out the old thread and successfully retapped the original thread without causing any damage. Also ran taps through all the other threads simply to clean them out, most of which had an ingress of muck and dirt. So they're all in perfect order.
Then the arch got a good clean with the tar remover. Cleaned and de-tar'd the arch liner and gave that a good coat of trim detailer.
Result so far, this will suffice for the time being, at some point ill remove the entire front suspension, bits will be powder coated and new components fitted. Just waiting for some new disc retaining screws to arrive now
