Re-Shelling a car? (saxo)
Seems like its really difficult these days to come across a tidy VTR/VTS thats not rotten, but i have seen quite a few very clean base models come up for sale recently and i'm wondering can I re-shell my vtr into a base model car? is it legal? if anyone could give me some insight that would be helpful.
I have googled it but im struggling to find out what's legal and whats not.
Basically I wanted to restore my VTR but theres so much rust on it and lack of available replacement panels is just killing my motivation to even bother with it anymore.

You cannot re-shell a car legally.
So for you to "reshell" your VTR into a base model, for this to be legal the car MUST stay registered as the base model.
You cannot transfer the V5 and VIN or Registration from the VTR onto the base model shell.
There is no grey area. For you to legally "reshell" you need a brand new unstamped shell with receipt from Citroen.

You could just put the Vin plates from the old car onto the new shell.

Ah unfortunately not my friend.....the vin plate is easily transferred as it's only fixed with rivets, however, the VIN number is also stamped onto the edge of the scuttle panel and if they didn't match and there was doubt as to the vehicles identity the tester could refuse to test it.
I have a brand new S2 106 Gti shell i purchased from Peugeot sat in my garage and a crashed 1998 S2 106 Gti "donor car" The plan is to re-shell the crashed donor car into the brand new shell, however, the new shell does not have any stampings on the scuttle panel but i have the original VIN from the donor car that i was intending to fix to the slam panel.
MartinObviously gave sound advice that i would have to See this link https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-registrat...built-vehicles
Basically you fill in the form stating what bits you've changed. If it's a new shell they (VOSA) might want to inspect it. You will need to provide proof the shell is new by producing a receipt etc, i have now located my original bill of sale from Peugeot and to my surprise i found after checking that the new shell has been issued with a chassis number from the factory, this is stated on the bill of sale so for me it will be easier.
Cheers to MartinObviously for some of the above information.

It's not great, both sills are rotten at the bottoms and would need fabricating as i cant find replacements, needs 2 front inner wings, rear panel, top of the drivers side chassis leg needs welding. Panels just aren't available anymore unless you're lucky and snap on up on ebay and who knows how long that could take.
I already welded up the rear arches and some bits on the fire wall. if i cant get any replacement panels there's no point carrying on with it. i'm not bad at fabricating bits out of sheet metal but making 2 whole sills and 2 inner wings from scratch is past my capabilities lol..

I don't know if you had already a look at 106parts,most likely, but there were a few replacement panels on there including the front arches, not of much help but have a look here for some inspiration lol

Why not just 're-shell' it in to the base model and take on the identity of the base model car?
Nothing illegal with putting all your VTR bits on to the base model and having a 'vtr-rep' so to speak surely? Obviously having to declare all mods accordingly.
Obviously it wouldn't retain its identity as a VTR and would be a modified base model, but its an option if you wished to go that way.... no?

Hi, i have considered this but when getting insurance quotes i would be looking at £2000+ for a base model with all mods declared to turn it into a VTR which sucks but i guess that's just the way insurance works. At the most it will cost me £400 fully comp on a VTR so I think my only option is to keep looking for a clean one or possibly find a clean cheap base model that i could use to chop panels off and repair my original car.

£2000 - £400 = £1600
could fix all the rust on your VTR for half that.

Is it legal for you guys to register and drive a LHD car over there?
What about buying euro vts and converting it to RHD if they are getting that rare in UK?
We used to do this alot the other way around in Poland a couple years ago, you would buy a RHD car alot cheaper than LHD locally and convert it.

Yes it's legal to register a LHD vehicle, as long as you go though the usual car import laws.
Converting to RHD is a pain in the ass, but yes it could be done with a donor vehicle for the steering rack etc.

I guess it wouldn't be as much fun if it's LHD in the UK. Taking your RHD car to the continent once in a while wouldn't be a big deal but I can't imagine forcing myself to drive a RHD car there more often.

It could make sense to have it done in Poland for example, as labor and possibly parts should be considerably cheaper there and we also have more shops that specialise in these conversions.
Might make even more sense if we're talking about importing more than once car. And possibly something else than a saxo...but yeah
