Default Gearbox question

Hi All,

Picked up a spare / replacement gearbox from a 2003 saxo VTS being broken. Just something different I noticed between it and the one on my VTS. The 'block' on the casting which is supposed to carry the box code (there is no code on my current box on this 'block' btw) is not present on the 'new' box. Differences shown in yellow circled area in the pics below:

Current box - block is there but blank:

New Box - block is not present on casting:

Any thoughts on why this is ?

Cheers
Craig

Yeah you're looking at it from the wrong angle. you need to look at the box from the "end" not the side.

I'll get a picture of what you need to be looking at later if I get time.

Thanks Martin. Hmm, I can't see the blocky bit side on either!

Yup, seen that post. The issue I have is that the part where the code is meant to be, which looks like a rectangular block which is part of the casting, isn't there at all on the 'new' box I have picked up. The box was definitely removed from a VTS (a 2003 one, I saw the car).

Just looks like the casting is a different shape in that area. If you look at my pics you will see what I mean. In the one which shows the box currently on my VTS, you can see the block , on the new one it's not there. The yellow circle is the same bit on both boxes, directly below the sort of S bend cutout in the casting.

Just curious as to why the casting on the 'new' one seems to be different ?

Yeah, i see what you mean.

Does look slightly different. However, i'd say it's on the bit i marked red. But the box is pretty grubby.

Just because the box was removed from a VTS doesn't mean it is a VTS box. IIRC 1.1 box were the only one to not always have a code. But all boxes should have the block where the code should be.

So, in related matters - I mentioned that the box on the car (which sounds knackered hence the reason for box number2) has no code, I also was not sure what it was. Had the car out yesterday (ended well, throttle pot knackered) and found that at 70mph in 5th gear it is pulling around 3200 RPM (ish). By my calculations that's not a VTS box, I think it is a VTR perhaps?

I plugged in all the values I could find in another thread about ratios and FD on a website and the VTR values came out the closest. I take it a VTS box should be about 3500RPM to 70 mph, no?

got some more pics of the gearbox. As can be seen, there is definitely no code block on the case. Any thoughts :

As i said previous, don't quote me buttttt, I'm pretty sure 1.1 boxes didn't all have codes

What tyre size are you running?

Just put it in, the overall speed at the wheels in 5th is nearly the same on a 1.1 vs a VTS gearbox.

Shorter 1 2 and 3 though, a change before 60 isn't a bad thing because you can hold it in 3rd gear where it matters.

Finally found the code, my son was cleaning up the 'new' gearbox - the code was on the bottom, 20CN03. Seems to be a VTS box. Saw something was posted ages ago that this one has a different 3rd gear ratio and no 5th gear bearing? Happy that it's the correct box anyway.
