Default How big should the sub box be?

Building a custom sub box. Its going to be shallow but can be as wide and long as i want.

How much air space will an 8inch subwoofer require to not sound shit?

Also how much airspace will be needed for a 10inch sub?

Im guessing its measured in cubic feet...

Lastly, how much of a gap would you recommend the sub be from the parcel shelf ideally?

thanks

Depends entirely on the subwoofer, each will have its own dimensions due to varying lenghts of throw, basket size etc...

then do you want it ported or sealed opens up some more questions...

Pick the sub you want or a selection and check their specs then you can look at whether you can build a box to accommodate them correctly.

http://reaudio.com/box.php decent tool to help you

I was going to choose this 8inch jbl sub

http://caraudiosecurity.com/gto-804-8-subwoofer

Or possibly this 10inch jbl sub if space would allow, although i think space would be very tight.

http://caraudiosecurity.com/gt5-10-10-1100w-subwoofer

which would give better bass, an 8inch with more space around it, or a 10inch in a tight box?

I'd take an 8 and save the space.

The smaller the sub the better its ability to handle faster punchy bass as opposed to the real low bass tones you can expect from the bigger subs.

hmmm id rather the lower bass tones tbh

ive found these 10inch subs which are slimmer

http://caraudiosecurity.com/jl-10wx-4-10-subwoofer

http://caraudiosecurity.com/prime-se...-svc-subwoofer

Would they give better, lower bass than that 8inch jbl sub linked earlier?

Which would you choose, rockford fosgate or JL audio?

Ive got a 12" JBL GTO1214 (I think) and it goes really really low. I love low bass and Ive had it for ages. Really powerful for what it is.

This is the 10" version

Edit: actually it might not be the best if you're pushed for space, but if its anything like the 12" it should be awesome.

You can use wadding to effectively increase the volume of the enclosure, 1 c/f would be fine for a low power 10.

yeah that 10inch one is far too deep for the space i have. And i used to have the jbl 12inch, was an awesome sub.

Something like this, 1c/f would be enough but if you had to make it smaller then you can stuff the box with wadding and remove/add more till it sounds "right"

ive never heard a sub with wadding in before. Does it not dampen/quieten the bass?

Nope it just makes it sound like its in a bigger box just make sure when you build the box it's completely sealed, even a tiny air leak will make it sound crap! Check out the talkaudio forum if you get time, they have literally covered everything you could imagine.

He's posting shite everywhere I can only presume to access the classifieds.
To ensure my post is helpful, I had my sub box custom made to the exact dimension that the sub manufacturer recommended. I also had it made of birch rather than mdf for better acoustics, although this was way back in '98 so things may have changed lol

I use that, You can find the specs needed to get the most out of your sub online just use the info from the specs and enter it into the fields and it will give you the sizes needed. You just have to play about till you get the perfect volume to match your sub.

I'm pretty sure using birch is still know to be better than MDF, more for stiffness than anything else.

It doesn't matter to much, if you use anything silicone based leave putting the speaker in until the smell go's away.
