Default Clutch pedal travel issue. Hope it's just the cable.

Hi there mates, got a problem with my clutch pedal.
Yesterday I've left my car to rest after driving it half a day without any issues. A couple hours later, having to go somewhere I noticed that the clutch pedal now gives me a very noticeable, increased resistance near the end of it's travel.
It's the same when I release the pedal. It doesn't feel catastrophic, but makes it harder to operate the car. My first guess is that the clutch cable done fucked itself.
Haynes says that changing the cable is a 4/5 spanner job
My question is - is it gonna be the cable?

To clarify - it feels kind of "sharp". It's like it bumps in resistance near the end of it's travel, then releases and it feels normal again. Clutch does not slip, car drives normally apart from the pedal issue.

Is this only when the engine is running?

It could be a release bearing issue. I'd try a new cable first though, it's a piece of piss to change it. the hardest part is hooking it onto the pedal

It's like that with engine off too, thats when I first noticed it happening.
Is release bearing a transmission-out job?

Is it good that it's like that with the engine off too or is it worse?
I remembered that sometimes I had my car emit some sort of a noise that would go away when I pushed the clutch pedal in. It didn't always happen thought.

It was the release bearing. Clutch itself was far gone too.

Actually also a couple of these teeth from the center of the pressure plate were missing, causing the bearing to fall in slightly, hence the sharp "bump" in the pedal travel. Bearing failing was causing a great deal of rattling noise that I previously thought to be some kind of an exhaust leak. Suprised by that.

Quick check for an exhaust leak is to cover the tail pipe with your hand, it forces it out any leak which it may have. May help you in the future.
