Terrible Broadband Connection Speed...
Firstly, im not much good with computers, so if anything i say makes no sense please correct me!
At my parents house our broadband connection is dismal at best, download speed is no higher than 0.3-0.35mbps and upload speed is around half that.
We know that the line into the house is poor as BT (the provider) came out and tested it altough at my girlfriends i consistently get between 9-10mbps download and around 7mbps upload and its literally a few miles down the road. Her provider is Sky.
Is there anything i can do to boost the connection at my parents, i spend a fair bit of time there and its really annoying as sites like youtube etc are a no go and if there is more that one user connected pretty much nothing happens.
The only thing it doesnt really effect is XBL, i can play with a 3-4 bar connection at either location although i believe that is your connection to the server rather than speed?
Any input would be much appreciated

Id like some advice on this aswell, you say your download speed is 0.3mbps is that like when your donwloading off rapidshare etc couse mines only around 90kbps on there.
Used to be with Eclipse which were ok but not TalkTalk and i aint joking its 1mbps

That is shocking, i get 10mbps all the time, i think my hardware may be limiting the speed.
Maybe talk to the ISP.

You got a microfilter on the line if you have a landline phone plugged in haven't you?

Ah okay that's fine then, as long as they go into separate holes in the wall... although it's rare to have two landlines in a house?
A Microfilter very basically splits the internet from the phone, you can ruin your speeds by connecting a phone straight into a connection that your internet is on without using a microfilter.

Strange thing is though is i know i get decent broadband in my area, i dont live in the sticks and if i drive 10 mins down the road i get a connection like this.
Only difference is the service provider, but surely it wont make that much difference. Somthing isnt right somewhere.. my dad was meant to get onto BT this week..

Anyways.....change the microfilter, to be sure

What setup do you use? Ethernet or Wireless, and I assume you use a router... How can you just drive down the road?

If your BT line is poor, try Virgin, as they'll install a brand new line into your house

Probably mostly depends on what your line capabilities are and howfar away you are from the exchange.
BT do not use great modems well not the latest anyway, 02 use ADSL2 modems which provide a very fast download speed for example. I'm with BT and get 3.6mbps if i were to change to 02 they could provide me with 6mbps max, which is nearly double. Maybe sky also use the new modems which is giving her the faster internet. It could also be down to your line as it seems weird that you have separate lines for phone and internet. Bt are not going to upgrade their modems as they will be using fibre from the exchange very soon. It also depends on how far away you are from the junction box of your street, your girlfriend could be very close.
