I have 13. Two of them are gold which I thought wasn't that bad.

a mate of mine has 208 trophies, including 1 platinum - he got it for getting all the other trophies on Burnout, there is one for doing the same thing on GTA

I think Trophies is Sony's way of competing with Xbox Live features. You get trophies from newer games on the PS3 for doing various levels/challenges. GTA4 has had this feature added.
An example of a trophy: COD5 completing the game on Veteran, or a much easier one: Burning a sniper out of a tree.
Games that I know with these are:
COD5
Far Cry 2
GTA4
Little Big Planet

There are loads out with trophies. All of the PSN games have trophy support, All games from January 2009 will have trophies built in. It's a Sony requirement now.
I haven't got a platinum trophy yet.
Platinum Trophies are Only like one per each game and only on the big games like GTA, Uncharted etc. You won't see them on the PSN games as to the value of the game price and size of the game itself.
Im level 2. not sure how many trophies i got. No more than 20 I think.
