Default basic pc build help?

right now i know this may take alot of help off you lot but im wondering:

i have an old pc shell that i am going to take the internals out of and put all new from the bottom up i have done alot of pc building in my past but have always had all the bits supplied to me (a-level mainly)
and i just want to know what you lads would put into it? i am mainly made nervous by the whole compatibility aspect

this will be a basic office pc/internet searching

it will need:

6gb ram
a large HDD
its going to run windows 7 for its speed

thats about it really any help would be great thanks lads/lasses! or if someone could point me in the direction of a good guide to what bits

have a look on here mate they do cheap components or complete builds.
I picked up a complete build for £310 with 8gb ram, 1TB hard drive, Quadcore 4 x 3.0ghz amd processors and a 1 gb graphics card which for the price is an awesome spec

1. you don't NEED that much ram memory don't go for headline figures
2. there is much more important specifications than just memory, for example speed, cache etc,.

Go for an i7 950 or an AMD Phenoem II 560 ish
i'd go for 3gb triple channel 16000mhz ram
GDDR5 GFX 1Gb something like an Nvid 400 series
64gb SSD and a tb hdd

and ps a quad core doesn't mean 4 x 3.0 ghz, just a core not a separate processor.

try places like Scan, overclockers, yoyotech, dabs etc.

Agree with some of what Jordy has said, however for a basic office and web browsing PC you do not need an i7, an i3 540 would be fine and its a lot cheaper.

Also you don't need an SSD unless you want superfast speeds but they dont come cheap at about £1.50+ per GB compared to about 3p per GB on a standard HDD. A standard HDD will boot in a fair time if you dont enable lots of startup programs and maybe opt for a 7200rpm HDD over an 5400rpm HDD.

Graphics wise you don't need much, I play the latest games on a GT 240 without a problem but now you can get some 400 series cards at around the same price.

Like Jordy said, you don't need 6GB of RAM. Stick with 3GB 1600Mhz and then go with the 32-bit OS. Also yes a quad-core processor wont give you 4x the processing power, its more around 3x and similiarly a dual core will give around 1.75x the speed of a single core.
