Default 720 or 1080 tv

looking at buying a new tv and just wondering is it worth paying the extra for a 1080 tv over a 720. will there be any difference in picture quality watching SD sky channels? we might get sky HD at some point but wont be paying extra for the actual HD channels. we do have a blu ray player but dont watch very many movies so not sure if we need a 1080 tv if not gonna benefit from its resolution?

size wise looking at approx 40" / 42" and from what i can work out our budget of £600 will get us either a good 720 tv or a cheap 1080 tv.

There is a big difference. I had a 27'' 'hd' tv which I used as a gaming computer monitor..

i could set the TV to 720p or 1080i, And not knowing the difference i thought 1080i was the best quality.

then after abit of reading people said 1080i was just a scaled version of 720p what reduced FPS.

So i repped 720p for abit.. but everything just looked BIG and zoomed in.

So i swapped my tv for a 22'' FULLhd screen.. and switched the resolution to 1080P.. And it was a world of difference. The contrast/colour's/detail/resolution are sooo much better , wish I'd of had fullHD from the word go.

Get the 1080tv, but make sure its the 1080P not the 720p/1080I

www.Ebuyer.com for cheap Hd tv's too

this tv is for lounge and wont be doing any gaming on it just watching sky tv. i know 1080i is the best to go for just not sure if its worth me paying the extra for it if the only HD content i'll be watching is the occasional blu-ray movie???

use ebuyer all the time always got good deals on there!!

well blu-rays play in 1080p, don't know if the 1080i t'v will play them as good.

for anything like a 32" or less, I wouldnt bother with a 1080 unless the price difference is negligible. At that screen size, it wont look much different.

above a 40, youll DEFINITELY see a massive difference in picture quality.

Mate if you're buying a new TV just get a 1080p display or don't bother. To answer your question - Sky/Anyone haven't actually (to my knowledge) been broadcasting in 1080p. They broadcast in 720p or 1080i. However they are going to move to full progressive scan 1080 soon. Not just that but for blu-rays as well, next gen games consoles (not 360s/PS3s - They aren't powerful enough to do full HD), if you want to hook a PC up etc etc. All of that will look better in 1080..

+1 on eBuyer, very good website in general, some TV bargains to be had at times..

Have a look at this thread;

http://www.saxperience.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=397472

And a search on here;

http://www.hotukdeals.com/

You can easily get a beautiful 40/42" full 1080p display for under £600. We didn't even pay that much for our 42" Toshiba 3 years ago.

I wouldn't even consider a TV that doesn't do 1080p.

But then I wouldn't consider just any 1080p TV...

might want to have a look here
http://carltonbale.com/1080p-does-matter

what i was told by an engineer
most tv's unless they have freeview or freesat hd built into them only upscale the picture to 1080p just as the ps3 and the xbox 360 do.(unsure if this is true or not)

right i have 2 46" tv's 1 sony bravia and 1 panasonic the sony is a led and the pannasonic is a lcd, now both say they are hd but the sony comes with freeview hd where the panasonic dont (the pani is about 8mths older than the sony)

now if i hook my pc upto the pani and the sony side by side the sony has the better picture detail for films and games but the monitor which is a 16:10 lcd at 1440x1200 looks alot better than both for gaming

if you are going to use the tv for gaming remember you will loose a bit of performance out of the gfx card unless you are running a higher/same res monitor

you can get a good 1080p for less than £600 i wouldnt bover looking at 720 anymore unless you want to save some £££, watching normal tv you wont notice much/any difference unless you put the two screens together

not sure. I get some sort of stuttering on 1080i, defo not as good as 1080p

Now do fork out the extra for full HD. Blu Ray prices are starting to drop so you'll be able to afford more in the near future.
