Girlfriend has something like this, it sits underneath laptop and plugs into USB port, and keeps the surface cool, and you never burn yourself as your lap is never on the laptop

Pop it open and give it a blast with compressed air if you have some available, that will help. The logitech Lapdesk is good but quite expensive.

check hp site for bios update.
Some dv models were notorious for overheating and a bios update was released to fix it.

First port of call i'd open her up and blast out all the dust from the fans and heatsink as said above, I've got an akasa laptop cooler that my main laptop sits on and thats never turned off! The heat it draws away is really good

^^Thats the one i have.

Very quiet, and it also has a 2 port usb hub as well!
I've had it 3 years now and last month i had to replace the rubber grips that run along it at the front, middle and back due to the amount of heat thats its dissipated! - I rate this one quite highly tbh.

Sucking air away from the laptop probably be best mate. If it was blowing air in, and the laptop fan was pushing air out they would be fighting against each other

From the factory it pushes cool air onto the unit, I simply turned the fans around to do the complete opposite, I've got another one as well - that one i've modified to have 4 fans, two blowing up and two drawing air away - that one is crazily good at cooling. Sad thing is i've broken the usb socket on the back so i've got to fit a new one.
