totally agree with tidgy. i dont have an antivirus as it slows the computer down so much . i have the securit essentials as it has a light cpu footprint and doesnt seem to affect performance at all

Kaspersky, as it is the best around, and it doesn't slow the PC down.
I don't care what people say, if you run no antivirus you'll pick stuff up and not know about it, until it's too late.
Norton, Mcafee, AVG and most others don't work as well as they could, and slow your PC down a fair bit.
I spent a short while testing them and by far Kaspersky is the best.
It caught all the Trojans, Viruses, Worms and Rootkits I tested it with, and it also comes with a Safe Run feature.
If you run your PC without an Antivirus, then install Kaspersky you'll not notice a difference as Kaspersky is very very light.
But make sure any other antivirus program is fully uninstalled using the uninstall program provided on the makers website. Because if you run two antiviruses they will conflict and cause your PC to slow and and die.

O? My dad's pc runs slow with Kaspersky... I've personally ran my PC with very little protection for years, never noticed anything bad happening.

Hmm, you won't always notice a Virus or Trojan, while some take a lot of CPU, others don't and they can go unnoticed for months...
While Kaspersky will catch most things, it is also a good idea to use Malwarebytes as that is the best Spyware program about, I tested it with known and unknown "Undetectable" Trojans and because they update their database so often it means very little can get past it.
It's also very easy to use. And free, although you can register and then you get "Realtime Protection"

Avira / Super Antispyware. And don't ever, ever use Internet Explorer as a web browser. It's only there so you can download Chrome, Firefox and Opera.
