I found the best way to protect your compute was to install Ubuntu. It is free and works superbly well. Better then most software you have to pay for. You can even burn it to a DVD or put it on a memory stick and just run it from there. That way you can try it before your decide if it is right for you or not and do a full install.

I run Ubuntu, Win7 and XP.
Ubuntu is great but when it comes to running Windows programs Wine is a pain. So it's always good to duel boot so you can switch to Windows when you need to

I still don't know how you can tell if you have had any problems, because you don't know if you've been hacked until it's too late.
Hackers won't always hack you as soon as they get your details, some will wait for payday (Bank accounts) etc..

I've been using Microsoft Security Essentials since a friend made me aware of it's existence. Not Microsoft fanboying, it just does it's job, keeps itself to itself and doesn't have any slow, clunky, image-laden GUI windows to groan over, nor does it feel the need to automatically integrate itself with Firefox.
Before that I was using AVG, which was also good, did it's job, but was annoyingly clunky to use and insisting on advertising stuff from Virgin Media everytime I opened it. :b
