Default Windows 7 - Connected to Internet but no Internet access? *Update #15*

As above. This is really annoying me now and I don't know what to do next! Had numerous BT engineers out fixing the line and now they say that the line is all sorted and yet i'm still getting an issue. This is making me lean towards it being my laptop/windows 7 rather than the actual connection/phone line.

Basically, it will connect to the Internet wirelessly but then say that there is no Internet access, therefore not letting me connect to any websites/go online?! Then the next day it will connect and there will be Internet access and everything will be fine. It also does the same if I use an ethernet cable to connect, although not as often.

Just wondering if anyone can shed any light? I'm quite good with I.T but this is really bugging me as i'm sure something needs enabling/disabling/changed and I just don't know what!

Cheeeeeeeeeeeers

Could be driver problem mate. Try updating the drivers for your wireless card if you havent already. Or you could try updating the firmware for the router if the connection keeps dropping out.

Have you ever had your wireless internet connection bridged to the wired connection for xbox live etc?

I had the same problem as you and i sorted it by removing the bridge as the internet at my university didnt seem compatible or something!

Basically its where the xbox is connected to the laptop/computer using a wired connection, and this connection is bridged to the wireless adapter in the laptop/PC allowing the xbox to use the wireless connection.

Go to control panel - network and sharing - manage wireless networks.
You should see the name of your network and any others you may have connected to.

Remove them all and restart laptop/pc.

Search for wireless networks and click on the name of your network and click connect.
Input password if required.

Once windows has connected to your network it should bring up a window with 3 network options (home, work & public)
You MUST select Home Network.

Hopefully this should sort your issue.
I had a similar problem and found that for somenreason the network type had changed to public or work by itself. Once I had done the above it worked fine.

Post back if it does or doesn't work and I'll give you something else to try.

My xbox is connected to the router via an ethernet cable. I have not had any problems connecting to XBL whatsoever, which is why it's leading me towards there being a problem with the settings on my laptop.

Thanks for the help dude. Although my network was already set to Home...

Anything else I can try?

Oh right i see mate, yeah if the xbox connects fine then so should your laptop. Have you tried different cables for the computer, and different ports on the route/laptop if it has any?

Sorry just saw your using wireless, i have no idea!

Did this just randomly start happening or has it happened from the start?

May be worth backing up your laptop and reformatting it all and installing windows back on.

i kinda had this problem when i first installed windows 7. Believe it or not it was internet explorer that wouldn't connect but everything else would. I hate internet explorer, it kept coming up page cannot be displayed etc, yet i was connected to msn and steam. I downloaded Advanced Browser which imo is the best internet browser i've ever come across, and it worked fine since. I've never used internet explorer, its slow, unreliable, and god dam annoying.
Might be a slim chance but try that mate.

Not sure mate. I have just managed to find where my wireless and ethernet drivers are and have updated them. Hopefully this has solved the problem, if it has bald24 you're a hero! But I won't speak too soon, i'll update this in a few days with the outcome..

Thanks everyone for the input.

Right, update. I updated my drivers as bald24 suggested. They needed updating and as soon as they were updated it connected wirelessly fine. It has been working perfectly via wireless for 6 days so I thought it was sorted. But then last night it just went back to how it was before. Just dropped out and will sometimes connect wirelessly, then other times won't be able to find it at all. Then it may connect but not have any internet access! I'm literally tearing my hair out with this! To the point where i'm tempted to take the whole laptop back to John Lewis and get them to either fix it or get a new one! It's less than a year old and I just don't know what else to do to solve this problem!!! Any more input before I take it back?!

Cheers.

Try changing the channel in your router settings. A neighbour may have theirs on the same channel and it could be causing interference.

Through your router configuration page, what make of router are you using?

BT HomeHub?
