Question £500 to spend what laptop ????

Spec:

Big screen 17"
Not into games but do use Photoshop etc.
Video camera
Windows 8 (guess I don't have much choice there)
Decent/reliable name brand

I'm well out of touch with memory sizes, CPU, etc. etc. so something decent but not too extreme.

What do you recommend and where can I get one from ?

Thanks

Satellite C870-11J

This is what i have ^^^ 17.3in screen, great latop, decent battery life, very light for its size, keyboard is very easy to use, starts up and runs very quickly. I run photoshop, some games, video editing and DJ software on it without a hiccup. Had it nearly two years (i think) and i haven't had a single problem with it. Would be perfect, only thing is i don't know if they do a windows 8 version.

Thanks christoph where did you get yours from or where do you suggest I buy it from??

Sorry for the questions but I'm in France (and don't really fancy an "Azerty" French keyboard) and am planning on coming back Feb next year with a bit of a shopping list.

Edit: found this one on the bay is this a newer version of yours ??

Yeah by the looks of things it seems to be the updated version of mine and if its anything like mine it will be bang on. Its £20 more expensive than mine was brand new which i brought online from PC World but can't imagine you'll be disappointed. Literally the only bad thing about mine is the graphics card as i presume will be the same for this one, but as your not gaming on it won't be an issue. For video and photo graphics it will be great! Honestly can't fault mine and toshiba is a well established brand as well!

Could you not just order it and get it posted to you? Save waiting until feb ha

Yes could get it posted but usually costs a fortune in P&P.

I have managed to find Qwerty keyboards on the net as replacements for the C870 - which opens up the option of buying over here then converting. The reasons for buying over here are that I can claim the 20% VAT back and if it breaks then I can take it back to the shop.

I appreciate your advice and the C870 range does look like it'll do what I want at the right price. Will see what others are similar

Fair enough. I mean i only know of this one for real, for obvious reasons. There may be better on the market, but i obviously couldn't advise them ha

lol it's the advice from experience I'm after and if you say it works fine then that's a good enough recommendation for me. Will just check what other are out there as well.

I've mainly had Dells but they cost a fortune and the quality has dropped off them.

Get yourself on " Ebuyer " mate. Some deals on there atm. Guy at my work place just bought a Zoostorm dual core 8 gig RAM laptop. £280 quid. No O/S but you can load what you want on it. Assuming your savvy with installing windows and what not.

Exactly what Carl has said, also worth checking out the 'Aria' website.

Hey matey.

So If you going to use photoshop I would go for a model with nVidia vc because of the CUDA cores. And If I have to choose a bran It would be Sony, Asus or Toshiba.

Thanks - at the moment it looks like a Toshiba Satellite C870-18V may be a winner
