Default Help, I'm being thick!

Hey all!
Need to ask a techy question as am more than slightly thick when it comes to modern technology, lol! I'm planning on getting the BF a HD TV for chrimbo as he's hinted about how good his X-box games'd look in HD. Well I know full HD is 1080p resolution and HD ready is 720.
Firstly, I've seen a TV that is 1680X1050 resolution but states HD 'ready'..??? Thought that resolution made it full HD????
Secondly....what is a HDMI cable and would I need one to connect his X-box to the TV?? He hasn't got an X-box elite...that much I know, lol!
Help! I apologise in advance for sounding dumb, lol!
xx

You need to be carefull about getting resolutions. Dont be fooled by people when they say that it's 1080i instead of 1080p. 1080i is interlaced to look like true HD, but isnt as good. 1080p is full HD.

HD ready just means it's ready to use a high definition source (like a HD dvd player, skyHD or xbox etc)

Also, it will only play in HD when you have a HD source played through a HDMI cable, or HD componant cable (HDMI is better). so obviously if you have free view or standard sky, it wont play through HD, only standard definintion.

Hope this helps

Thanks, it does. So if I get a 1080p TV and he uses a HDMI cable he'll appreciate the maximum resolution of the TV?

If he has an xbox 360 premium, he will have a componant cable to play in HD, but it wont be as good as a HDMI cable. I could tell the difference just by changing the cables, so will be a good investment, as you can use the HDMI cable for other sources aswell like a HD dvd player/skyHD or plugging a laptop in etc.
