Play external Hard drive through TV
My father in law wants to play his external hard drive files through his tv.
On my setup my DVD player has a USB in that allows me to plug an external disc in and navigate files and play them.
No such joy on his Sharp Aquos setup. It has USB ports but they are purely for updating firmware.
Is there a device out there that would connect between the hard drive and the tv and allow playback?

I doubt if there will be a dedicated device for this, seems like alot of money & effort since it would need a cpu, memory, surround sound & hdmi / component etc outputs etc, all the standard components of this type of a device & then in the end all it will be used for is to plug a hard drive into the TV.
Probably just have to get a DVD/Blueray player which has this option in it id have thought.

I use my ps3 with hard drive, works a treat, for the hard drive to work it has to be FAT32 formatted
you also have to click triangle on the playstation then click display all to view the video files

Just realised what confuddled English my reply was written in.
Any of the modern games consoles let you do this too, but your still talking a fair whack of €a$h. I think it will be some kind of combo device your after, see what Craig turns up though, i'm just speculating.

im busy putting all my dvds onto hard drive now, so much easier than chopping and changing dvds
if he really wants to splash out then theres always home entertainment computers, you can put multiple hard drives in, you have to use memory and stuff like that and an operating system to run it all but once set up they are sweet ill get some links up tomorrow

I have a lg bluray player.. cost around £120 because I got a deal on it with my lcd tv...
that plays my external hard drive straight through my blu-ray player to my tv, I can also just plug memory sticks in and bring up images etc...

I thought mac uses FAT32?
Are you sure the file formats/codecs etc are compatible for playback on the TV?

Both Mac & Windows can read & write in FAT32 so if he reformats the drive in FAT32 that should keep both OSX & the WD drive happy (and Windows too if the situation arrises).
Only issue is that FAT32 doesnt allow for single files to be larger than 4.2gb so any HiDef movies etc would need to be broken into 4.2gb chunks!
EDIT: FAT32 size limit it actually 4gb
