Is this laptop any good
Starting university on the 2nd October and could do with a laptop to do my work on...
Basically I need to be able to run Autocad & 3d Modelling Programmes so need something that can easily do that and all the other general stuff you use a laptop for, preferably for the next 3 years until I finish this course..
This seems a decent price and spec but I don't know much....
Anybody help?? or recommend something else....
I would have a macbook pro but it is a little too expensive for me atm...

being honest about it ... look into a apple computer for that IMO
But anyway .... You want to get as much RAM as you possibly can afford as well as a good AutoDesk supported graphics card. You might want to consider quad core and a 64-bit system. What computers have you looked at so far?

I would love an apple, only problem is the cost, in excess of £800...
and my mate who has a macbook pro, said that you have to buy something that will let you run windows in another window to be able to use CAD if that is right?
I am on a bit of a budget, which probably means I will be struggling to get the spec I need??
Just been browsing currys and pc world tbh.... not well up on my computers...
Any recommendations will be appreciated...

CPU is the processor, reason being with the abover comment.
For £100 more you can get hell of a lot more for your money really.
I payd 550 euros for mine when i moved to spain:

for a laptop i would say core 2 duo with at least 2gb of ram.
desktop you can custom build for about 600£ with a core 2 quad and 4gb of ram

Check out Overclockers.co.uk
They do custom ones built to order.
example:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...d=1236&subcat=
They're more expensive due to the OS being seperate but the one in the link you posted has no mention of what graphics tech it uses. My desktop is custom built by them and I rate them highly.

Just checked the full product info on the pc world one you were checking out.
http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/sto...rmationSection
Intergrated graphics, which unfortunatly don't do much. you'd struggle with 3d modelling programs such as Autodesk Maya etc on intergrated graphics.
sorry for double post

I would stay away from PCWorld/Currys etc if it were me - normally very overpriced for what you get! Get an idea of what you want when you're in the shops, but then look for something equal online and save yourself a few ££..

Cheers for the help guys,
I went to PC World as I was told to meet my Mum n Dad there after work...
They where there with my old grandad and he bought the laptop for me, so I can't grumble and was only fair to get a decently priced one... (voided macbooks)
So i got this....
http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/uk/en...4-3873224.html
Does everything I need to do and easily runs sketchup, photoshop, cad etc with ease as I have been using these programmes the last couple of days...
Probably not an amazing laptop but does what I need...
Has some cool features I like such as:-
-HP icon lights op on laptop like a macbook
-It can laseretch images into special cd's (lightscribe)
-Fingerprint security apparently
-Free windows 7 upgrade
-sleek remote control that slots in the laptop
-cool touch sensitive wifi & volume controls

Which one out of those? They don't really differ too much.
My Acer laptop is the equivalent to the £679 (NR493EA) model listed in your link. Only things that are different between the HP and my Acers is mine has/came with bundled:
Wireless N as well as the B and G
Bluetooth
300GB HDD capacity
Bundled:
320GB WD Elements External Drive
Logtech VX Nano wireless mouse with Micro-USB adaptor
Targus Carry case
Kensington Lock
All this through a friend, through his work for £350
But as for the HP, any of those models are quite modest. But the Level 2 cache being 2mb+ does help as does the extra RAM and processing power.
Can't moan if you didnt have to pay for it.
