Holdawayt's family barge without a family
Well the majority of you worth knowing have already seen this bizarre new purchase. But for the rest of you, here's the new sensible car.
I had a Nato green MX5 with silly wide wheels with a loud exhaust, I then wanted something faster and and more refined. So bought a very rare mk2 golf 16v gti (threads for both on here) but the running costs were silly and as an apprentice I needed something cheaper to run. Plus me and Faye are trying to buy a house soon so the saving needs to start.
I've decided to take my motorbike test, as they're quick fun and very cheap to run. So with that it was time to sell the golf and buy something very cheap and comfy so that when it's too cold for the bike I can still drive.
Enter Pablo the Passat
It's a 1.9Tdi and averages 45mpg and got 74mpg on the motorway home from Manchester (Compared to the 23mpg with the Golf it's a life saver). I paid £700 for it and I'm over the moon. It's the most comfortable, most technically advanced, and cheapest car I've ever owned. On top of all that the boot is huge to fit those motorbike bits in!
Progress wise I'll be looking to swap those horrible steelies for some standard Passat alloys, smarten up the bodywork and leave it alone. It's cheap motoring and I'll have a bike to mess with.
Sorry for waffling on, I know it's nothing special but a few people have been interested.
Tom

No need for a thread really, clearly given up on life What's the mileage, assuming high for £700?
Has the mk2 gone?

Mk2 gone, if I die it'll be in a horrific bike accident.
I request a R.I.P thread please

I know. Made my weekend that did. Just had to have the rest of the forum know...
Tbh, I can see your reasons behind this and keep switching from something like this, or a beemer estate. Think this would do me better on fuel Bristol -> London / Bristol -> IOM.

Sorry Matt, missed your question about mileage, very high indeed. 212,000 miles. But a fully stamped service book (company car).
Jay I was looking at an E46 320D for the same price (£700) but the insurance was much more expensive for the BMW as it's more desirable.
Blackie, if this was my summer showing off car if would already be lowered, but it's purely a daily work horse. No need for harsh suspension, it's so comfortable it would be silly to ruin it.

It looks pretty clean.
I suppose that time comes to us all *house and stuff
I dont plan on taking that on board for another year or so like. (24.5ish) Saxo is still staying though :/ unless i HAD to sell it for a tedious car.

212k!?! sweet mother of god!! Personal preference but I'd rather have a Bora
Will look smart enough with some Passat wheels on, not bad for a winter nail really Tommo

Starting to wish I'd bought a bora, but I'd have nothing towards a bike then.

Lol it's perfect for what I need, but I'd rather modify a Bora which would then become inpractical so yeah, right choice I think lol.
It'll all make sense when the bike arrives.
I do find myself sitting really far forwards though, I'm used to the Golf pushing me back in my seat so I keep creeping forwards haha

I'm just having "LOOK AT ME" withdrawal symptoms. Feels weird being in just another Passat on the road. I'm used to people turning their heads etc. Plus I can't afford anything nicer really. I'm underpaid and do a lot of miles. It makes sense.

How many miles you do a week? Can't you keep this for a while and then get a 'look at me' car?
