Default Anybody do Yoga??

Sounds pretty gay I know but I have my reasons...

I have good form in the gym, I always prioritise form & time under tension over weight, don't arch my back etc.

However.

Even from being young I've experienced lower back pain and recently herniated a disc in my lower back which resulted in my sciatic nerve being trapped.

I was only out of training for a week with rest and chiropractor treatment, but it's not something I want to do again, and my lower back still suffers from a dull ache when training back such as T-Bar rows etc. (Pull ups are fine) however i'm trying to strengthen my lower back up rather than let it grow weaker.

Would yoga possibly aid with flexibility and core strength etc. or is there a better alternative? Which will help reduce lower back pain?

I'm now going to be seeing this Chiropractor once a month as a preventative aid, hopefully it won't happen again.

I even hit a few golf balls to try and loosen my back as I never suffered back issues when I regularly played golf, it's not something I have time to take up competitively again, but I could factor in the driving range or a round of golf once a week if that would also help long term. (I'm still a member of a golf club so it's feasible)

Just after the best sort of class or hobby to undertake maybe once or twice a week to help aid with flexibility and my back etc.

Any suggestions over Yoga/Golf?

I usually do Yoga once a week to help clear my mind (gaaaayyyy). Always stuck with the same video and find it puts me in a trance like state afterwards.

What I do is by no means strengthening for the core but it does loosen up my back and neck.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsOqcwcy2mI

I've tried some of the strengthening workouts and I could see how they would improve what they are targeting, but I don't enjoy it at all.

Cheers fella

Will have a gander at that when i'm home after work, probably be best to do some at home initially such as the youtube video, see if I like it and if it helps and then could do a class once a week to put me thru my paces.

I did about 6 months of "Power Yoga" 2 years back when I had a back injury, definitely helped but my back pain was down to a weak core, stronglifts helped much more but Yoga gave me a good foundation

I was reading that a weak core can result in the problem, It's something I'm looking to work on! Going to start upping my ab workouts as i hardly train them. Typically really on squats/deads etc. to hit them. May very well help!

I haven't tried it personally but a lad at work swears by it. He's a rock climber and says it's great for core strength and stretching your muscles. I've always thought it was a bit gay like but that's just me haha. Suppose it'd be good for me cos I'm aching all over at the minute.

Hanging leg / knee raises are brilliant, can work up the reps until you need to have a dumbell inbetween your feet etc, russian twists, heavy dumbell side bends too are all good.

Still worth giving Yoga a go though, few months won't hurt - at worst you'll be a hell of a lot more flexable haha

I see you put one in there for my benefit ey Matt??

Seriously though, good reasons.

Apparently yoga is good and I've been thinking about it for the same reasons as you. Do you have any sort of pelvic tilt? I'm thinking your lower back pain may well be tight hips/weak hams/dominant quads/weak core all in one go! Probably need to stretch out your hip flexors an awful lot, so yoga should help. I bet golf helped because of walking.

Pelvic tilt is something I haven't particularly noticed but can't say i've looked for it, could definitely be worth having a look at

I sit at a desk all day so not incredibly mobile, which would explain tight hips as I was fine when I used to play 8-10 rounds of golf a week as a younger lad.

I train hams, but my quads are noticeably dominant, I have quite juicy hams but my quads just grow like weeds. Got to admit I used to skip hams, now I focus on them quite a bit, have done for the past couple of months since being encouraged to by a friend who works for m10 fitness.

Awesome post though,

Cheers Dave, glad I put a yoga image in for your benefit now, you earned it

There is nothing like Gay ,whats wrong brother. You are talking and discussing about your health and that's absolutely fine.
Now you were thinking about yoga, yes it will help you, yoga really stretches your body and helps making your body flexible, and i don't say suddenly you will have back pain relief but definitely gradually you keep practicing and you will find difference.
