View Full Version : Weird intermitent misfire!!!!

I have done a search, but couldn't really find the answer I am after.
This misfire doesn't always happen on start ups, but when it does it will occur once I have driven the car till warm and then turned it off. Also, when accelerating normally or foot flat too the floor it just won't accelerate. It feels like the power is coming on then off... I don't think the engine is loosing compression in the cylinders (well I really hope not). What confuses me is, when cold weather comes around my car seems to do this. I need to get this problem fixed as will be on the motorway on Thursday and I don't want to blow my engine up or anything..
Rep will be given :)

When was it last serviced??
Could be worth changing sparkplugs?

Does your car have a coilpack, or does it have HT leads and a distributor? Sounds like dodgy HT leads to me, or somewhere around that area. But if you haven't changed the plugs in a while, I would check those first of all.

The cyclinders could be loosing compression or maybe a problem with the sparkplugs. Or the air/fuel mixture is too far out of balance to ignite

I hope it isn't the cyclinders at all, as I just won't be able to afford to have that go wrong. It would have to be bye bye saxo for a while.
The spark plugs were changed around 15k miles ago. What is odd, is that every winter I get the same problem.
Oh yea, my engine has HT leads (which are very old and could do with replacing).
My car is going to a garrage to be looked at, as I am sketching out that it could be the cyclinders.

It could be water getting in the ht leads, get them changed and check again

Yea seems about right actually, as it is really bad once it has been raining.
Right I am bored, so I am going to pop down halfords and get some ht leads and see what happens.
Cheers guys.
Rep shall be left in a sec :y:

Get some plugs too! 15k is old. They will cost you less than a tenner! I bet it's the HT leads. Get a new distributor cap too mate.

Holy cow. I just went into halfords and they wanted nearly £30 for a distributor cap. Fook that, I can get it for half that through my local garrage :).
Cheers toad :). I will replace everything 2moro and fingers crossed it should be right as rain :).

hey alright vinny.
as everyone has said, if your going to change the HT leads, then you may as well change the spark plugs and dizzy cap, oh and spray (lightly) all the connections/caps and ends etc, with WD40.

Right then fellas. I have replaced the plugs and ht leads and its like driving a new car. Hopefully this has solved the misfire and it won't come back to haunt me in a few weeks time.
I didn't realise how dirty spark plugs could get after near enough 15k miles. I thought they would last longer. But oh well. Rep for all, woo

its amazing how may people we get in with a mis-fire and they always think the worst but 99% of the time its the plus, leads or coil pack lol simple service parts that should be replaced each year or at least every 10,000 miles
