right my brother has decided to get me a cam for crimbo wahoo will it be ok to run the cam without a remap? will i notice much difference without a remap how rough will it be? just gotta save up for the remap which is like 300 damn i suppose it is my bday shortly after crimbo

you can run it without a remap. may see a slight improvement in performance. you'll need a verneir pulley aswell remember otherwise your wasting your time.
Karl
6th December 2007, 10:16
as above. it'll run dog.
What cam is he buying?
vtr130
6th December 2007, 10:28
It wont run dog mate, mine was fine running without a remap for a long time!! :) 4 months and i never had any problems!!
Just make sure you have all the breathing mods done before, and the cams are set up by somone who knows what they are doing ;)
Karl

on a standard saxo VTR with an exhaust and filter,
if you cam it, its not gonna idle very nicely surely?
youll need a map?
vtr130
6th December 2007, 10:32
Well mine was a standard vts with manifold, bmc and 708's was fine mate!! There not that lumpy ;)
Obv im not 100% with vtr's but my mate had a cammed one without a remap, headwork, mani, exhaust, nd enclosed induction that was fine without a map ;)

Even if it has a lumpy idle, who cares?
Sounds lush imo..:d

6th December 2007, 14:57
True but when it cuts out its a c**t

6th December 2007, 14:58
When i put my cams in the VTS it was a pain in the arse, wouldnt idle tidy, if i was stopped at traffic lights it would flood the lambda sensor and would have to switch the car off and back on.
Runs like a dream after a Map tho!

im gettin 3 weeks wages in 2 weeks time for over xmas period, and im having some cams, but ive seen catcams on ebay for just over 200, but theres kent kam on kam racing, so what difference, theres about 3 to choose from on kam racing
vtr130
6th December 2007, 15:17
Catcams 708's and piper 285's are the popular choices, just depends!! Both make same power! Personally id go for 708's ;)
asap_legend
6th December 2007, 15:18
when i had my cams fitted about a month ago, i had to drive about for 2 days before i got my remap done and it stressed me quite a bit. would cut out quite alot and the idle would go up and down constantly. after the remap i have had no problems. i wouldnt get the cam fitted without the remap imo
vtr130
6th December 2007, 15:22
Yeh but thats wot people think, with correct cam timing and adjustments you can easily get cams to run fine on a standard map, but just not to optimum performance!! Mine is not fully mapped and i have 300 degree cams, and tb's it runs fine :)
andywiddss1
6th December 2007, 15:37
on a vts if u retard the inlet cam an advance the exhaust cam it should not cut out or stall at the lights they just need abit of adjustment an yes u may loose a few bhp or u could just go an pay 450 quid plus vat for a remap i know witch i would do first ha ha
Scottish_Gaz
6th December 2007, 15:48
im having a remap aswell, my problem is, ive not alot of knowledge about cams, but im wanting to buy cams and have a remap, so my question is, what cams and how much will a remap cost, but when i ask that in other threads, people tend to go of the subject, all i want to know, is where in the midlands can i have a remap done and at what cost, to go along with which cams?
vtr130
6th December 2007, 16:23
To be honest i would go for 708's!! With regards to remap i would hold it off save up and buy a standalone... Alot of people have been having problems with standard ecu maps l8ly. So i wouldnt waste £300 when you can get an omex for £545. Then i have a map that will run 708's with omex ;)
Scottish_Gaz
6th December 2007, 16:28
whats a standalone?
williamsvts
6th December 2007, 16:33
i used the 708s in my vts for 6 months before it was mapped and it ran and idled fine. use the timing settings off catcams website. my mate had a cammed vtr and that ran fine on standard map. only idle shit if its not timed up right.
Scottish_Gaz
6th December 2007, 16:34
what u mean idle? and what is a standalone ecu?
andywiddss1
6th December 2007, 16:37
:panic: :panic: :panic:
williamsvts
6th December 2007, 16:39
idle is tickover. when your engine is running but at a rest. standalone is a reprogrammable ecu that replaces your existing 1.
Scottish_Gaz
6th December 2007, 16:47
were can i purchase a standalone ecu? would it be unlocked so can just plug and play?
vtr130
6th December 2007, 16:53
what u mean idle? and what is a standalone ecu?
idle is when your cars is not in gear and your foot isnt on the throttle usually around 900rpm ;)
A standalone ecu is another complete unit which takes the place of your standard ecu, it has alot more facillities and would enable you to run either throttle bodies, turbo or cams more benificially!! :)
vtr130
6th December 2007, 16:54
standalone will come with no map so you will need it to be mapped acoordingly to your spec
Scottish_Gaz
6th December 2007, 16:55
were can i get one of these ecu's? cheapest place really

they arent cheap mate. your gunna be looking at at least 1k. you'll need the ecu- bout £600, wiring loom fitting and mapping. they arent a plug and play item.
andywiddss1
6th December 2007, 17:04
gaz mate if i was u i wouldnt buy any cams or ecu until u understand a bit more about what ur buying so many people get sold the wrong bits by so called car tuners ect then find out after that they got the wrong bits or it dont do what it says on the tin theres alot of good infomation on this site find out as much as u can before u spend ur money mate hope u dont think im taking the piss just abit of friendly advise

thats what im doing now, finding out as much as possible, gettin it cammed aint the prob as my dad a mechanic, hell be doing everything, only thing i need to do myself is sort out the remapp, and by sounds of it, it rather get a remap on my original ecu, so im just trying to find people on here who are from the midlands area to tell me were they got there ecu remapped, that all i wan to know, just place and price!!!
williamsvts
6th December 2007, 17:12

6th December 2007, 17:13

Scottish_Gaz
6th December 2007, 17:15

Interesting how your car idles so well with no map Williams. Mine is mapped, and it idles like an absolute pig! It idled OK after Wayne mapped it I suppose, but then I tweaked the exhaust cam a bit, got some good gains, but it idles like a machine gun. You sit there bouncing up and down in your seat, lol.
vtr130
6th December 2007, 17:22
Have you done all the simple breathing mods?? Like manifold, induction kit, full system?? Otherwise there no point getting cams just yet!

Probably best to keep this in the tread, as it's informative...
Wayne charges around the £450 mark. I paid TotalMotorsportSolutions for the mapping, and also the installation of the cams and a manifold. They did the cams installation and manifold, then they gave the car to Wayne to do the mapping. Wayne then obviously takes his share of the money... In light of this, i can't tell you how much Wayne charged for my mapping. You should give him a ring, contact details can be found @ http://www.chipwizards.co.uk
Cheers.

he normally charged £450.
but i conned him a bit. i took my mates mapped ecu, told him it was mine (but fucked) that i had mapped a while ago and could he swap the maps and 'tweak' it. so i got it for £350 :P

how much did totalmotorsportsolutions charge you for that? did you buy the cams and manifold off them or just get them to fit it all?

Thats a nice bro lol! Like said before, its ok to run the car without a map as long as you set the timing on the cam's! Hope you get the right price for the map m8?

I don't think they're in business anymore chap. But IIRC, I paid somewhere around £1250 - £1300. That included the catcam 708s, supersprint manifold, labour of installing it all, and the re-map by Wayne. Which gives a genuine 150+ BHP.
