View Full Version : Rebuild on a VTS Engine...

Luke
28th December 2007, 22:56
Evening All,

Could of be getting a VTS as a track car within a few months and I was wondering if you could provide me with some information with regards to an engine rebuild?

The car itself as 106k on it I think, it's about 7 year old and has been serviced regularly so I'm wondering if you any of you could answer these?

- What mileage would you rebuild the engine?

- What needs changing/replacing during a rebuild?

- Anything else you would change?

- Recommendations/Information I may need?

Like I said, the car has been serviced when it should been, never been ragged much etc.

Thanks,

Luke

if it aint broke... dont fix it

I wouldnt rebuild unless its fucked and/or underpowered.

I wouldnt use mikes old car as a track car though, get something shite.

Luke

It isn't Mike's car anyway Ad.

I'd rather go with an older MK1 and totally strip it.

PM me if you decide to rebuild mate...

williamsvts
29th December 2007, 11:23
piston rings
rehone bores
big end bearings
main bearings
steel rods
arp rod bolts
oil pump
water pump
timing belt kit
lifters
valve stem oil seals
cam oil seals
oil gaskets/seals on head

and when its apart check the crank journal sizes bore diameters and svalve spring lengths etc.

Luke

How much do I expect to pay?

rushy_23
29th December 2007, 11:27
A proper engine rebuild like that spec above about sounds pricey..

Still would be awesome Luke!

williamsvts
29th December 2007, 11:33
it doesnt really cost that much for the parts, its paying for the labour that would be expensive. i would have a bash yourslef though. the engines arent really that complicated.

Liam_
29th December 2007, 12:23
Is it not worth going for foged internals if you're taking the plunge and rebuilding it?

williamsvts
29th December 2007, 12:31
thast what the steel rods are. pistons depends on the spec of the rest of the engine.

Ryan
29th December 2007, 13:11
Is it not worth going for foged internals if you're taking the plunge and rebuilding it?

not really, not if you are building it to normal spec the stress on the engine wont require the extra strength that comes from forged parts.

Luke
29th December 2007, 21:34
Thanks for information so far.

OK, so I lied last night. I'm looking at buying Mikes car yeah, only because I want either a track car or fun car to play about with etc and that's good enough for what I want to spend.

Ryan
29th December 2007, 21:38
buy it, rip the gay 'suki' sticker off it and rape it.

Steve
29th December 2007, 21:44
dont rebuild it till it starts to fuck. get some newmans cams in there when you do go to rebuild it.

I mean if it's been serviced right etc, how long before you think it will need anything doing? Roughly?

I'm OK to thrash it now and again despite the mileage?

Ryan
29th December 2007, 23:00
the whole 'milage' thing is shit on saxos, a high milage car can be better than a low milage car, long journeys are better for engines than 5min pit stops.

Luke
29th December 2007, 23:04
Well as most of you will know, when Mike goes driving 99% of the time it's a long journey - like upto Scotland, Yorkshire, Bristol or even down to Brighton is a 40 mile round trip so chances are it's better than a 106k town driven car yeah?

I just worry as obviously Saxo's ain't brilliant cars, but I want to know that the engine is going to be reliable for the odd foot down time etc and doesn't mind being ragged ;)

Luke
29th December 2007, 23:08
Cheers Steve.

Yeah, I'll get it serviced when it should be etc and I'm sure it will be fine. I drove it a few months back when it just went over 100k, still pulled extremely well considering mileage etc.

A full system needs to be added though.

if its goign to be a track car just dont drive it like you dont care give it some respect and it will return the favour (strong beliefs) sure it will be fine, even stick it into a garage at extra cost to give it a good looking over........ then every so often give it a service youself doesnt matter about service history etc. when the engine goes it goes either repair it or source (easy) a newer engine which is cheaper than a rebuild imo

only worth rebuilding if going to have wild cams and throttle bodies.
and careful with the gearbox.

I wouldn't source a second hand engine simply because you don't know it's history etc, so rebuild would be the better answer and I'd drop cams in at the same time I suppose.

As for tracking it well...I'm tempted to strip it, use it for the odd track day but then use it as a fun weekend car kind of thing.

can get th rebuild parts for a few hundered quid. how do you know who used to drive it though? somenes 45 yr old mother may have been registered keeper but her 17 yr old son could have thrashed the tits off it. i would rebuild rather than use an old engine.

Like I say, I know it's history since 51k and I know it's got a Full Service History and we ALL know Mike doesn't drive like a chav, even though he acts like one ;)

Just hope I can get the monies now.

Got to agree with Mr 5 Door, milage is nothing to worry about as long as its been serviced regularly and not bollocked from cold itll keep going for at least double the distance that its on now.

Too many people worry about milage, someone the other day was panicking about 50k :homme:

Mike's cars got to be one of the most well looked after cars around, im sure you'll have no problems.

Buy it now :)

Luke
30th December 2007, 00:01
Thanks Matt, need to spread some love first it says :).

Yeah suppose it will good then for another 100k without any problems, least Mike knows I will look after her and wants me to have her so he can still see her.

Do all the above and keep the current engine fresh and well looked after....

AND

At the same time do a Willsy and get hold of a nice new(er) engine and go crazy on it. Then it'll be an on-going project with the VTS still in use throughout.

It's another route anyway :y:

Luke
30th December 2007, 06:02
Wish I could afford a another engine Ads, but I'm pretty sure that won't be happening.

Hello mate, get some sleep you looney lol :p

I know little Suki well mate and have seen the history
Well serviced like mine through and through and apart from a few little things atm she is mint

Dont re-build until its needed mate, also gives you a chance to save some money for the time but it wont be cheap obviously more depending on parts you go for and labour...

Strip her, cage and go full-on on the performance if you are serious bud id expect about 2-3k for some serious performance mods like manifold, cams, remap, throttle bodies, cage etc :)

jaybiss
30th December 2007, 20:57
rag it till it goes pop, then rebuild it

if its a weekend toy theres no need for back seats or carpets or headlining or door cards

see where this is going? strip it to fuck like bunneys on ssc ;) (no dash ftw)

Did Bunny make an FC feature in the last months mag?

Something like 150kgs has been stripped :fcuk:
Saxo that weighs as much as a bag of air has 1/6 of its weight removed
= light as foooook

Snewham's is stripped bare and mine only has 2 seats in it and a lightweight sound system so isnt exactly overweight ;)

No worries fella

Shes already got the zorst and is set up well, begging for a SuperSprint manifold, cams and a re-map really ;)

Back seats removed and 2 buckets with harnesses
Components as your sound system, keep the same alloys on there atm

Move on to mods like...
P+P throttle body
Bigger brakes + braided brake lines etc

Are you thinking about running her on bodies bud?

I didn't know if there a set mileage you should rebuild an engine, like for piece of mind etc but obviously that isn't the case.

Seeing though it's a toy for the weekend etc, I'll just leave it as it might take a few years even to reach 150k etc.

My 1400 is on 122k, has a full Citroen service history upto 70k then i have serviced it myself ever since..I have done a couple of trackdays and it never let me down, i have never had probs with the engine itself..

Aslong as good oil is used and its allowed to warm up you can rant it all day long..

Still pulls like it should, will play with VTR's so its all good..

I will admit its quite tappy and stuff but runs fine and it does quite abit of stop start too..
