Got cams? How's your MPG?

I noticed I was at a nice round number while nipping into the petrol station, so I thought I'd have a crack at seeing how far a full tank would take me. I was well into the reserve area, and I filled it until it clicked whick worked out to be 39 litres of BP Ultimate. Anyway, from this 39 litres, I manged 320 miles. As 39 litres is 8.58 gallons, that works out to be 37.3 m/g

To try and keep the test fair, I mixed it up with about 40% town driving and 60% motorway. I also gave the car some stick a few times, and didn't just poodle a long trying to conserve fuel. Bare in mind I'm also using an S1 gearbox, so the revs are constantly high on the motorway... What do you recon, good or bad fuel economy? If anyone else knows theirs, please share! :y:

jesus fucking christ i am lucky to see 260 with my vts thats without cams. Belly vts was saying he gets more with cams and a remap then he did standard. :(

Boot it a little but tend to cruise between 70-75.

iv'e recently had a full tank of fuel in my mk2 vts, standard barring decat\stainless thru system and induction and ive had 322miles to £45 v-power (£1.11per liter) which i work out to be 35.7 mpg (322 miles divided by 9 gallon)

mixed town and motorway and some a bit of heavy right foot - im happy

I tend to get between 55-60 miles on ten pounds, which I believe is between 25 - 28mpg. That's a mixture of normal and slightly quicker driving in and around urban and motorways. Car has piper 285cams and few other bits

After some toddling along on the motorway at 60 I found mine to be pretty good.

Got no figures as there only going to be estimates. Cant be arsed. Its crap
round town. The missus Fiesta Zetec S is teribble on the motorway doing the

I dont really know if v power is any "better" than normal shell unleaded, yeah its a higher octane. May contain less shite i suppose.

IMO i wouldnt bother. If your cars mapped for higher octane fuel its a certainty, but if not i wouldnt waste the extra cash.

Can get just over 400 miles to a tank inc some hard driving if i'm careful most of the time in my vts. Can dip to just over 300 miles to a tank for hard road use, and well below for track use. With cams i could get over 400 miles to a tank with wideband on and being conservative, on track i got down to 15 mpg though.

Nah, it's not running stupidly rich, but it's still rich. It happened once the big valve head went on. I need another map done, but won't be getting the stock ECU re-mapped again. Waiting for the big jump forwards to bodies...

I agree, i stopped running my mr2 went v power went to 105.

Its just not worth it. Standard stuff is good enough!

in my total honest opinion ive driven my car on v-power for yonks an if i put ordinary petrol in it doesn't feel as responsive, its definate difference that i notice, v-power seems to be smoother tad more responsive and makes my exhaust pop like a bitch....definately not worth the ridiculous price of £1.11 where i live tho :S

"dat" isn't too good, that makes a full tank last you "around" 200 miles.

To answer the original "got cams? hows mpg?" question

It doesnt matter if you have cams or not, ecconomy of an engine is down to how much fuel it uses, not much fast the cams get the gases in and out.

Our demo car will have the economy to match "there or there abouts" a standard VTS. but running 170+ bhp.

If you want more power you have to burn more fuel, hence why bigger injectors come into play when you hit around 165 - 170 bhp on the VTS. Think about it, if you've got camshafts which are holding the valves open for longer and also creating more lift, you're doing this so you can get more fuel and air into the combustion chamber. Obviously the map will be important with regard to the economy of the fuel consumption, but you can't produce an extra 40 - 50 bhp on the TU engine without burning more fuel, it's impossible.

but when you're running your engine at part throttle i.e. cruise (not as in CRUZZZZ) mode as opposed to boyracer mode, you arent going to be producing the extra 50hp. your engine will be producing enough power to hold the vehicle at the desired speed.

OK, but this depends on what speed you are sticking to, and at what RPM the engine is running at. I don't see what you're getting at here to be frank.

You're not going to get better fuel economy by fitting higher lift / duration cams, as the engine will become less efficient in the lower revs.

brake specific efficiency drops in the lower rpm but also increases in the upper rpm - but again that ultimately depends on the quality of the map.
