hi guys, as above. i'm really not sure what to do? the plan was to get a mild cam and get my head port and polished with stronger valve springs and stronger cambelt and remap for my vtr engine but a number of my friends have said just do a vts conversion. and said buy the vts engine, take the head off yourself whiles its sat in the garage and keep saving money, get everything done and bought i.e cams, port and polished head, valve springs, stronger cambelt, and everthing needed for conversion, then fit it. run it in and then get it remapped. dunno though cause thats going to cost me almost double. but when i look at the power figures i.e vts engine once finished should produce around 150-160bhp once run in and remapped wiv my other mods such as four branch, full s/s system, induction kit, and lightened and balanced flywheel. and the vtr should produce around 120-130bhp! any ways i'm just not sure if it will be worth the extra money. what do you guys reckon?? cheers, joe

Depends how much power you want and how much £££ you want to spend.

If you did get a 16v, whack it straight in. Drive it about while you save more. Cams are easy enough to change in the bay.

Could you not just sell your R and buy a S? Alot easier

hmmm, yeh i could but i've got my private plate on my vtr, and its lowered just the right height and everythings pukka. would take alot of time and effort to change over to an vts. might just cam mine, makes senses cause its so much easier but would love a cammed vts engine in mine.

You can get decent 16v lumps of Tam with everything included from anywere between £400-600. If you can fit it yourself then bonus, if not your looking at a garage charging a good days labour - worth asking lads on here first though. For cams and a remap your looking close to a grand again, thats without head work.

It depends where you want to go with the car - if your looking to keep it for a while and slowly look to up the power - then I'd go for a 16v lump!

If you think you'll get rid of the Saxo in 1 year or so for aother car, then best to just cam it mnaybe, or just save your money. Just my thoughts on it !

I have just done a 16v conversion, and gone from 1.4 to 1.6 16v and am loving driving it at the moment !! I'm planning on camming it and then hopefully some throttle bodies !

JTC_VTR - i have been thinking the same thing....

id be happy to get my car to 120-130bhp with cam, remap etc... it would suprise alot of people imo....

everyone says drop a VTS lump in and then mod from there....why not be different?

I do plan on dropping a VTS lump in myself...but that will be when the saxo is a full blown track car.....so i might aswell make good use of my VTR engine (27k on the clock) make it a decent road car...then when im older...got a better, safer car....track slag the saxo !

im goign for the vts conversion on mine at the moment.
doing - big valve flowed and polished headhead
PH3 Cams
polished TB
4-2-1 manifold
Decat - once the MOT's been done.
remap - once running

all this is happening before the engine goes in,

Unless you can get a good cheap VTS with loom, management and all ancillaries and can fit it your self I would say tune the VTR. Or sell the VTR and get a S. Though i would just boost the VTR ;)

cheers guys, im going to go for a vts conversion and cam it in the winter! now im on the hunt for a decent low mileage engine, loom, ecu, etc, going to buy another raceland four branch from kam-racing which will connect to my vtr scorpion system, and i've already got a decent low mileage vts gearbox and i've got a mate who's a decent mechanic with access to a good garage with all the tools etc to do a good conversion, plus he's done this conversion twice before and had no problems as its a fairly easy conversion according to him

youve made the right choice mate! i couldnt decide which to do either, but the 16v conversion gives a wider canvas for future modifications, so thats what im going for, my engine should be gettin fitted very soon :y:

hmmm, apprently the vtr bottom end is exactly the same as the vts including pistons etc, so it would be a whole lot easier to just chane the head, inlet manifold, ecu, loom, add a oil cooler etc wouldnt it? as i've already got a vts gearbox and new clutch and lighten flywheel on my vtr engine.

No its not the same. You CAN get it to fit but its ALOT of fucking about. Not just a bolt on afair. So much simpler to buy a 16v lump
