View Full Version : Thinking of staying in Education...

Right, I've done uni, I'm still at uni, I've got a great job, I'm getting paid rather well. Life is good, very good.
Now I personally can't be arsed to work in the 'real world' though.
Now that I couldn't run for VP as I was too good for it I'm thinking about a PhD.
Long shot I know, but I was wondering if anyone has any experience with PhD'ers in industry? has a PhD'er in their family or is in fact the carrier of a PhD?
spam is welcome just incase no one actually replies with anything useful.
Incidently if I do it and get the qualification (3-4 years) you'll all have to call me Dr Adsayer and I'll ask for a username change also - guaranteed to pull the babes

All I know is doing a PHD greatly reduces your employability, so if your doing a PHD your more likely to end up in education

Not really..... depends entirely on the area of work you are doing, but it is a well known fact that in many cases doing a PHD can reduce your chances

you see that's my thought... I'm thinking about motorsport maybe as a career... you know bone the pit girls and stuff. McLaren, RedBull, BAR etc all look for people with either Masters  or PhD's... Bachelors dont stand a chance unless they're already in the industry with a proven record.
but then I've got to think about whether long term its for me...
toughy

Still on my bachelor degree (as you know already Ads), or Legum Baccalaureus (LLB) in Latin :)
(Small-fry, I have a masters, says a pompous Ads ;))
PHD is a good idea, especially if you want to go into the motorsport career field. At the end of the day, qualifications like these will be with you whenever, wherever, so do what you feel is right.
You have to ask yourself, do you want to actually step away from the whole 'education' thing and do work? Or if you're happy where you are and what you're doing, (hence, life is very good,) why change? Go PHD dude.

only thing is you will never have any real work expereince, will end up just being a researcher at a uni and eventially a lecturer..
get some life expereince and a job with the degree you work hard for
masters was pushing it but phd takes the biscuit

My mates Dad did one a few years back. Took him ages as he had to combine the learning with his work life. If you do it now you won't have to worry about work meaning you have more time on your studies!

I've got work experience... 1 WHOLE year in industry, and 6 months of working for a well... technically, a motorsport team.
I've got more life experience than most. nice sheltered life style, never having to lift a finger etc etc
Engineering is a bit different to business management, in that its better and the more higher qualifications you have the better jobs you bag. unlike BM where you can aim for as high as a McRags employee.
