I take it these need doing when you can hear them "tapping" as your engine ticks over, what sort of price is it in a garage or can it be a DIY jobby? :y:

could be, you generally hear it more when there's no revs of course because the engine is just ticking over

Yes, its normally the tappets that are noisey when you start it up from cold, and i believe its a DIY job.
Either that or your pistons smashing into the valves...;)

Yes all you need is a feeler gauge and the tappet specifications for inlet and outlet as they may be different. Can be done by you yes, just need to get the valves on rock (tdc)

Isn't a hard job to be honest mate. The Haynes explains it pretty well but as always, the illustrations are pitiful.
There's a good guide (http://106owners.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=7995) here. Rather than turning the engine over by hand, I find it easier to pop the car into 3rd gear, jack it up so one of the front wheels are off the ground and turn that instead. The only difference for the silver top engine with the roller rockers is the adjustable part of the rocker - it's a small hex rather than a flat headed screw... you can simply turn this with your fingers. :)
