whilst im rebuilding my car (pretty sure you know why lol)
im going to have a tinker with the engine
thinking just lightened and balance with some high comp pistons
and some head work
might go bodies too
any advice on this muchly apreciated (ie good places to get bits done and were to buy good brands of pistons/rings ect)
not really going for mad power
just around 170ish (allready at 150 with cams remap and breathed)
plus im looking into a set of jenvey bodies and an ecu in the future

Track tuition first? ;)
All the usual tuners will be good to get info from, GMC etc etc.

yea gmc did joshs lump didnt they
seems like a good job lol
qep i heard a bit of a horror story but it could be a 1off
gmc didnt build josh's him and his dad did gmc did the mapping
it uses gmc airhorns on jenvey bodies (same as i have)
Qep for engine rebuilds imo, cant falt them. espect not now the dyno is sorted and they know what headwork/cam profiles produce what power and where exactly.
AlexR

do tell this horror story then :P
Seeing as they are building very high spec engines for good prices and their workmanship is great. Either them or longmans are my bet. QEP did my engine, and plenty of other successful ones.
probably the horror story of djturbos 205. which they sorted FOC

lightened and balance is the last thing you want to do, id put that money to a qep, puma racing head.

high comps, jp4 head, 734 hybrids, bodies - sorted
AlexB
25th May 2008, 18:37
was mistaken on josh's then sorry
I would tell the horror story but the lad didnt wanna name and shame so I won't
but let's just say they caused more problems fixing the stuff they did wrong
and even destroyed some bodywork
thanks for the advice guys
most of you said a name I had in mind
I'll have to get prices ect off em now LOL
how can qep destroy bodywork?? they dont touch cars.
just the engines out of the shell itself.
you sure its the right company in the horror story
pjm300
25th May 2008, 18:42
if you only want 170bhp i wouldnt bother with head work. decent head work should be done to compliment the cams, ill let you know what mine makes without any head work :D

the lad had the engine in and it was leaking eveything from everywere
so they took the whole car and pulled the engine back out like
did some pretty bad damage towing it

was just gonna get it tidied up like not to full extremes
got the newmans cams in it so I'd get it done to suit them like if that makes sense lol

with you driving it doesnt matter what power it makes, miss daisy in her 3 wheeler will be faster ;)

me talking crap sorry
Ryan WTF
yea ok I had an off
but im not the worst driver in the world
just mad a mistake
and I'm fixing it
but whilst ive got the car apart I'm sorting bits I was planning on doing
if you've seen the thread I'm changing loads of stuff not just the engine
I know having a fast car doesnt make you a fast driver
and its not like I'm going 200 plus
notice quote.
then notice who im quoting.

apolgies man sorry
cause I'm on my phone its it doesnt load properly
lol fair enough.
if you want pistons theres some for sale on here atm.
although depending on your spec i wouldnt 100% buy a set of pistons without knowing where you are going.
AlexB
25th May 2008, 19:11
well I have the cams in
im looking at bodies and some beadwork ECT
what dya reckon
pjm300
25th May 2008, 19:20
i still would say dont bother with head work.
a decent standard sized valve head will cost you 750+ VAT
a decent big valve sized head will cost you 1k+ VAT
just get a jp4 head, apparently flows better than the j4 head, and will save you 900 quid
AlexB
25th May 2008, 19:24
thats the c2 head isn't it
I heard they are better but wasn't fully sure
plus would my cams fit??
pjm300
25th May 2008, 19:27
yeah they should fit, but you'll just need to chuck some vts valve springs in there.
you'd also need to get some more studs drilled and tapped in on the inlet side, but it will save you a fair few quid!
mine should be up and running within about 3-4 weeks, if you can wait that long, you could see if the jp4 head is a restricting factor
AlexB
25th May 2008, 19:43
well itll take me about that long to get to the stage so I'll see what you get
jpsaxo
26th May 2008, 16:15
As said, GMC just mapped mine, wont fault there work either way...
As with always in this case where you dont know what spec you want. PM me a budget and i'll spend it where imho is best...

I would recommend GMC or Longman if your in the UK. My last engine was made by GMC and it wan every event it was in. I’m not going to name any names but there are quite a few tuners out there that are truly appalling. Also ask your self what you want from your engine. The 106 cup cars and C2 challenge cars have a lot of bits and bobs in them people say are not needed. In a way this is true as you can get the power with out them but how long will a engine last with out them if its really driven hard?

replied to your PM Alex, hopefully that helped mate,

i agree with what paul said in page 1,
sell cams, buy 734's, high comp pistons,45mm throttle bodies, c2 head, l&b bottom end your looking at around 170bhp+ id imagine.
AlexB
26th May 2008, 19:30
well atm im just looking at getting the internals ready for stuff like bigger cams and bodies ect
just kinda saves me pulling the engine back out to do them when i do the cams and stuff
if that makes sence

whats georges exact spec? he had 190 hasnt he?
georges engine isnt decided yet as far as im aware its still on the dyno at QEP finding the best cam/head set up.
I know of a few specs which have made between 180 and 200bhp.

26th May 2008, 19:38
the 734's produced over 190bhp on G's engine if i remember?
even 809's produced very good power at around 7300rpm (very low for cam spec) and had very good torque from very low down, but they require solids alex so thats an extra £350
AlexB
26th May 2008, 19:43
well atm was going to keep the newmans for a bit
but prolly next winter itll get 809s or similar
people dont seem to get what im trying to do here tho
was going to get all the big end and pistons done whist the motors out
as preperation for when i do get the rest next year
it saves me pulling the engine back out when i finish it off

On GMCs rollers, where everyones car seems to fair better than on other rollers ;)
AXracing
27th May 2008, 07:40
No where close to as high as LADs by all accounts lol. My car actually read lower on GMCs rollers than two local rollers so they cant be to bad. But I would never read to much in to a RR printout as there always way out.

qep said i "should" get 180bhp with 734's high comps, and c2 head.
id be happy with over 170tbh

i think on georges engine they made peak at around 7100 or around there but he had a very well worked head tbh.

I've just seen the 803 cat cam's on 106RR make 192bhp, with 148lb ft of torque, with standard valves, great work by Sandy there...
huge power there, espec on std valves.
sandy has produced some fantastic work recently.inc the 1400 16v 205

USE IE!!!
its easy to work :P
has all durations and lift.
This is a bit OT but... I've drove fast cars and ive always felt they could handle the power... (Fastest was a lambo with after market exhaust which was running close to 500bhp apparantly - pics on request) but i dont think id be to 'comfy' sitting in a car that has naily as much BHP as Clio RS... oh and 3Ncaps LESS!
dislocated shoulders ftw! :D
