Alright peeps,

I'm replacing my current 1.4 engine with another that I have managed to get cheap. Today I removed the engine but left the box on. Will I be able to fit the new engine leaving everything as it is? Not much room for movement with the box intacked.

Thanks Matt

I can imagine it's very tight.

When i did my engine change, even though I kept the same box, I took it out to give me more space.

So its not possible to refit the new engine with the box still in?

I don't know, I've never tried it. I thought that it would be easier to take both driveshafts off, and then take the engine and gearbox out the top as a complete unit - took about 2 mins to have the engine and gearbox out, from the time of undo'ing the mounts, to having the engine completely out.

The saxo engines sit quite close to the inside chassis rail (drivers side) and I wouldn't think that there was enough room to move the engine to allow the main shaft of the gearbox to mount through the splines of the clutch - but I may be wrong.

IMO I'd take the gearbox out, as it may save time, would be a pain to get engin in only to find that the gearbox would need to come out - Plus it would give you a chance to have the driveshafts out to look at their condition, plus you'd have to put new gearbox fluid in, which can only be a good thing (refresh the gearbox fluid)

If you've got a crane, then maybe worth a try to lower engine in, and with it hanging, try and line up the gearbox and engine.

Best bet is to get out there and either measure up, or try it.

You can do either.
Easiest way with box still on is by lifting it in from the bottom. You will have to raise the car quite high to do this but it is the eaiest method.

Unless you have an engine crane with an adjustable lifting eye where you can tilt the engine to one side so you can tuck the gearbox under the mount first then it may be a bit of a pain.
