burning smell

there is a burning smell coming from my engine- it smells like plastic- i thought it may be a plastic bag, but now i know that it definately is not- and the smell is coming from a black rectange box (wide and thin)that sits in the middle of the engine bay.

does anyone know what this is? will it be safe to drive?

yer 9i think it is that- i dont have a pic- the smell has stopped now- although i have another f*ckin problem- plz check d probs n queries section, cheers
