Hiya,

i have a 306 1.9td, and i need to keep it for a couple of years at least (money issues).
The question is, apart from servicing etc what can i do to make sure that the car runs well and does not cause any problems?....and money lol
Cheers in advance....

Don't thrash it or change gears in high revs while engine is cold.

the peugeot diesel engines are the fantastic imo. our old pug van never gave us any bother. only time it was in the garage was for servicing/mot`s. we sold it with 214k miles on it and its still going to this day cause i know the guy that bought it. we also got another one as the old one was so good. basically if you don`t kick fuck out of it everytime you drive it , it will last you well.

read up on thm and the reason i got it was because i needed a car that was going to last a couple of years with minimal problems and heard tht it would last as long as it was looked after. what sort of costs am i lookin at for a full service steviet?

I had a M reg 306 td, it had 190k on it when i got it, i sold it to my uncle (who needed a temp car) with 230k and didnt service it once (it only cost me £350 to buy so servicing wasnt worth it). Admittedly it failed the MOT due to sharp panels (it had a few nasty dents) and the tyres were worn, so he decided to scrap it, but the engine was still running perfectly.
One problem it had was that it didnt like to start from cold, but a change of glow plugs for around £20 sorted that out instantly!
Bomb proof engines imo and if i was ever in a situation to need a cheap car for a while, the 306 td would be my choice!

About £150, get the coolant, oil and gearbox oil changed. They can use engine oil so keep an eye on it (it does a check on oil level when you flick the key)
Gearbox oil is not a service part on the 306 (unbelievable I know) so probably worth changing that, will keep the engine running well. don't try and nail it from a standing start as that will hurt the clutch, treat the clutch well and it'll last forever (my GTI-6 has 101k and an original clutch) where as a change is a good £250. Drive shafts also die from naiing it off the line.
Don't rag from cold as that will hurt it and could kill the turbo, don't lower it as that will end the rear beam.
Otherwise enjoy. Good cars, I'm on my 3rd now (1 diesel, 1 rallye, 1 GTI-6) and all of them have been great

Nah! Don't rag from cold, wheelspin or lower it. Otherwise it's all fair game. I know of 200k mile Dervs which get a good hiding everyday, they only complain if they are ragged from cold.

Like with most things
Start playing and thing normally fail or go wrong
Good old engine 19.td alot of 406 and 406 taxis still kicking about with those engines and they get nothing but abuse and seem to still be going

Yeah, they go for half a million miles in taxis etc, just don't start beating the crap out of it while the oil is still in the sump as the turbo will not be your friend! That said, it's a stronger unit than most

Meh
Turn the boost up and thrash it
That's what turbodiesels are there for...
