the 00 model onwards.

The 140bhp one isn't quite as nippy as the VTS but that doesn't bother me, just broadening my horizons..

can get one around 3.5 k with a fairly high mileage but its toyota so in theory it has quite a lifetime

what you think ?

How tall are you?

My missus is 5ft5, when she was looking at one she was put off by the fact she could hardly see over the steering wheel.

Other than that, a bit expensive on parts and not that many 2nd hand spares.

Looking foookin ace all riced up though

I was looking at them before i got the ST. But then i found out i wouldn't be able to see over the steering wheel and visibility at the back is poor which makes it hard to park. Other than that they look gorgeous!! My lil bro saw one the other day and shouted FERRARI!!! lmao

Celica's- for the money I can't think of many cars that are prettier. Granted, you can get some better driver's cars, but I'd say the Celicas, even the base models, are very good-looking motors. 140 model is brisk enough for some fun but won't touch a VTS, if you can stretch to it, the VVTL-i 190 version is worth a shot, gives the Celica the punch to match the looks. Handling good but not amazing, nice interiors and built properly well.

Decent cars.

Not bad looking cars.

Dont expect the world in terms of performance, but still not that bad.

Fucking cramped inside mind.

because I dont see myself being able to afford a GT

Jazz

Don't see why not, You should be able to. Would look gorgeous then!

V5J
1st January 2009, 18:46

V5J
1st January 2009, 18:47
could sell the vts now to save money on petrol, what cheap motors are good on petrol?

GallowayVTS
1st January 2009, 18:48
Insurance group 15 is not bad for what they are. Go for it lol

Jazz
1st January 2009, 18:48
Seriously look into the 190 model, before my ATR I was looking at them and the 190's aren't much more expensive to insure than the 140s I found. I drove the Corolla T-Sport which has the same 190 engine and it was more like it engine wise, (rest of the Corolla 190 is shite compared to the Celica 190 mind, but thats another story...), 140 version isn't bad but the 190 has the poke you'll be looking for coming from a VTS.

V5J
1st January 2009, 18:54
okay mate il look into it, it does pretty much same mpg too. bit more expensive on tax, but if i save for abit get the GT alloys and kit then it will be shit hot!

GallowayVTS

Try and get one that was made before april 2001 so you it doesn't fall into the new tax band system

mate u should get the gt4 98-99 model.you would pick 1 up for less than 3k with low miles.they are a serious machine with the 4wd.my mate had 1 of these in ireland and spent a few pound on it.subarau eater amongst other high performance cars.but if u dont wanna go back the years.gud choice of car.not much goes wrong with the celica if u get that was looked after

cheers man good advice. and too vtss, dont want the old one. its purely for style and the badge, dont care about performance either! the new one with the gt bits on would be awesome to get into everyday. imagine the looks! :P

I worked for Toyota when they were new and spent many happy days rebuilding engines!!! The 1.8 16v VVTI engine is shared with the MR2 and the Avensis and some of the early ones suffered with high oil consumption..couple this to the average company car driver who NEVER checks the oil and you end up with a broken bottom end.

The most extreme one I repaired was a brand new Avensis with 900 miles on the clock, I'm guessing that the numpty in the factory had fitted No2 bearing in the wrong way round because all I found when I stripped it was a sump full of metal!!

The ideal condition to check the engine is initial start up from cold, this is the only time you'll hear the 'death rattle'.
This is a light tapping noise (similar to a hydraulic tappet pumping itself up when cold) and can be heard for a split second after cold start up, once warm you won't hear it.

The 190 VVTL-I is a different animal all together, this is similar to the Honda V-TEC in that as well as variable valve timing they also having variable vavle lift.

The engine charecteristics are very similar to the Civic Type R, but not quite as manic....although the power surge once you hit 6000rpm all the way to approx 9000rpm is quite something!!

Mechanically they're ok, they did suffer with cabin trim rattles, but apart from that they drove well and did reasonable MPG.
With regards to driver comfort i'm 6ft 1 and had no problems with room!!!

Overall a nice car, but give me a '97/98 ST205 Celica GT4 any day of the week!!!

The last generation GT4 (ST205) was a completely different drive to the earlier pop up headlight version (ST185).

Although the '185' is supposed to run around 220bhp it runs half the boost of the later car.

The '205' runs approx 16psi of boost as opposed to a measly 8psi of the earlier car, hence the HOOOGE kick in the back when you floor it!!

If i'm right, the '205' runs approx 241bhp.

It also has far superior brakes with Alloy 4 pots up front and twin pots at the back, Toyota 'Super strut' 5 link front suspension (which is hidiously expensive when it fails, usually given away by knocking when driving) and an improved larger charge cooler system. (early ones had water injection and anti lag fitted, this was to homologate them for WRC, however it was disabled by the factory!!!)

If you can find one a last of the line 97-98 (P-R reg) UK car is the one to have.

Service history is preferable with Timing belt and Platinum plugs replaced every 63K (although the engine is 99% safe should the belt break)

Off you go to Pistonheads to find a real car!!!

A close mate of mine actually owns a 140bhp Celica. Have to admit its a very good all round
car.

Nice interior, slightly cramped as mentioned but its nice snug fit with a big centre console.

Lovely seats as standard.

The engine is fairly revy, but doesnt give you the kick a VTS/GTi would. But the engine
tone is sweet and I imagine the build quality is near unbreakable in good hands.

However straight line performance when pitched against the VTS or GTi. 140bhp doesnt
perform greatly.. But imo you get a better package.

They handle great in standard form too. I personally really like them.

Also agree with Rogerreno. My mate is 6ft and pretty beefy and fits in the Celica fine.

Forgot to say 6 speed box too!
