View Full Version : Engine Tapping Noise
Mystic

Well, kick start the new year with a heap of problems with the damn french can!
At the back right of the engine i can hear a tapping noise from under the rocker cover, afaik the vts has hydraulic tappets so does this mean the tappets are fooked or what. They a hard job to replace? Any specialized tools required?
Cheers
EDIT: Car is also running Newman PH3s

OH GOD, not another noicey VTS lifters thread, does it sound like mine.. lifter vid (http://www.zen16052.zen.co.uk/new-vts/vts-chatter.wmv)
Mine were new (Newmans), they are being replaced again on the 17th..
Been told its not an easy job to replace them but doesnt require the head to come off, if that helps.

I don't drive a Saxo but on my car the tappets were very loud (sounded like an old diesel), however after an oil change the noise was gone and went back to normal.

Does sound similar to yours Manc, but less 'tinny' its more sorta knock sounding than ticking!
I'm running newman cams too, ill edit that into the first post!
I'll go check the oil levels atm & top up if necesary!

Oil level is worth checking, when was the oil last changed?
There are some oil additives you can get help with noicey lifters also...

Yea its mad aint it, the new lifters were fitted with the cams but for whatever reason mine have decided to get really noicey all of a sudden :wall: time to spend even more money on a car I aint driven for nearly a year, the joys of buying a car to do up hey

Oil level is full, had a leak somewhere on the left side of the engine ever since the cams were fitted, think theres a gap in the sealent somewhere so sinceoctober i've put about 2 litres of oil through it, although most of that was tesco semi synthetic, so i supposze i could try giving it a full flush. I've been servicing it every 8k miles & i think i must be about that mark soon, had it penciled in for Jan so i'll flush it through and refill it with some decent stuff asap to see if that fixes it. Also noticed im missing 2 screws from my coilpack & when i put pressure on the coilpack the tap got noticibly louder!
Bloody saxos, i swear i wish i never fiddled with the damn thing.
Gf is getting on at me to sell it & my 2 minis since none of them really work & just buy a nice car and not touch it lol

I had it, wynns lifter fluid sorted mine!! Gave it an oil change the other day and it seems to come and go but its no where neer as loud as it was. (didnt want to leave the wynns in)
They wont do anything bad, just wont be lifting a valve as far as they should.
Only downside to the tappets is you dont know which one it is so you have to change the lot!.

LOL that is amusing.
Mystic, Yours and mine are alike, I've had mine going on at me since I first bought the car and that was in Feb 07, I ve got used to it now LOL.
Get it serviced pal, these frenchies like attention and require drip feeding of cash also :panic:

Loose spark plug? I know it's the other way round but lmight be worth a try

Cheers for the advice guys, never thought about the plugs actually, i've had a bit of a missfire of late too, might be something to do with it.
Thats first port of call now. Will check out the Wynns lifter fluid too. It sounds like is coming from the furthest right cylindar so if it gets to replacing them at least i can safely ignore the 2 left hand cylindars!
Bloody saxo is doing my head in atm, might aswell have my bank details printed on some vinyl to make a nice window sticker :err:
I had a bit of a drag race on my own private island with a totally standard nissan almera GTi, parkers figures put a standard VTS ahead of it by half a second. In 3rd & 4th gear pulls though there was nothing atall in it, if anything, the almera was edging ahead, was hoping all the money iv thrown at cams, exhaust, standalone management etc i'd be giggling my way off into the distance

Tapping seems to be gone now. Cheers for all the help dudes, as always!
stuck half a bottle of Wynns in & i took all the plug out and tightened them up. One plug was a little loose (2nd from the right of the engine) so im not sure if it was this rattling or a tappet, i think a tappet though as it was too rythmic to be something just rattling around!
Bad news was all my spark plug threads were soaked in oil somehow?? Also the tips of them were all white as a sheet which i think means i have a fueling problemo in the lean department

Glad it sorted Mystic, just be thankful its sorted without costing you too much :) unlike myself...
I would get your map sorted ASAP m8e, running lean is not good, especially if you like the loud pedal, slightly rich your alright but lean is a no no.
If all goes to plan this weekend over at Rickyp-rpm's I'll should be able to record the 2nd gear rev needle vid you ask for a while back.

Ah yeh, that will be good, yours will blow mine away most likely lol
Yeh the lean thing is a problem but i've been so busy lately i've not been able to find a windows laptop so i can get the map off the ECU. Andy keeps messaging me to send it to him so he can at least fix the idle on it, iFail
I've still got to fit my wideband & AFR gauge & then i'll be able to see where its going tits up although i have a feeling its over 6krpm cus like i said above, when i was having straight line runs with the almera after 6k the acceleration seemed to tail off & it felt like it was sorta misfiring a bit too :err:
I've put megatune on the missus Vista laptop so heres hoping that it will be able to get the map for me!
Bloody cars :P

Problem solved then, make sure it has a serial port thou and ofc you'll need a standard serial lead (male > female), that should be enough to get the old map off and over to Andy to tinker with ;)
I'd get the wideband fitted m8e, it alters the fueling in real time so there is less chance of it running lean or rich unless stated otherwise in the map, did you go for a Innovate number which I had the groupbuy running on?

Yep yep, had a flick through the instructions for installing it but i don't understand where it connects to the wiring loom, it seems to just need positive & neg connections :err:
I've got a USB-Serial adaptor wire for the missus laptop so hopefully that will do the trick otherwise the hunt goes on for a serial port lol. I think the LC1 needs a serial port to set it up too, whats with old technology being so heavily relied on these days :err:

does that thing let you map a cammed car yourself then?

I can show you how to wire the LC-1 into the original wiring loom very neatly :) then the whole thing is plug and play. I did this for ManC. The stock narrowband sensor has 4 wires, +12v, Earth, signal wire to ECU and signal wire earth. We use the +12v and Earth for powering the LC-1 since it is nicely switched earth :) and we just send the wideband output signal from the LC-1 up to the ECU and it's all in the 1 plug.
ManC - can you take a picture or 2 of what I did to your LC-1 shortening it and attaching the plug-and-play plug which we cut off the narrow band sensor??
If I do say so myself, it's a lovely little solution! And completely non-intrusive to the cars originality. Only downfall, it does ruin the stock narrowband sensor - oh no chuck it in the bin!

Haha, yeh the pics would be appreciated ManC & Andy. I had a flick through the instructions for the LC-1 and coundt actually figure out which wire was suppose to report back to the ECU. There seemed to be 2 for 'analogue output'.
In other news i finally got hold of a usb-serial cable which i can plug into the missus Vista laptop & with Andys help have managed to sort out my idle and located the cause of underfueling! It was actually being caused by under fueling... haha!

Was parked next to this little Gem in a scabby little run down somerfield carpark too! Was worried about leaving my saxo there for 15 mins, let alone an R8 lol!
So Andy used a modified version of Mr_X's fuel table to get the fueling back into at least ballpark figures! The LC1 and my AFR gauge is the next step i feel. Cant wait to get out later on and let some of the new ponys out!
