In seriousness, get a trade behind you, always usefull, and can always go back to it if you want to do something else, then need something to fall back onto

Alot of people will tell you, IT is a good career, always going to be some form of work, will always be there in the future, but with that, i hear alot of people getting bored of the work they are doing, but then again, its upto you if you want to stay in a job that bores you

beaumontdvd
13th January 2009, 20:22
I suppose once youve decided on what you want todo and you do an apprenticeship or go to college then once you get the job in the area you qualified in, if the moneys poor and you decide to go back to college you don't have the money to pay for anything as your out of a job, so really your fucked lol! unless work and college ;)

Matt67

6.30 an hour at tescos. Part-time

Studying to be a mechanic at college.. Dunno why the moneys shocking.

gouldy87
13th January 2009, 20:23
when i started plumbing i was on about 80 quid a week, when i started pipe fitting and welding ( industrial plumbing ) i was on 166 quid a week so to start with the money isnt too good but the money is daft when your fully qualified honestly, my mate who is self employed for the last company i worked for ( he is 21 ) has been working 7 days a week for the past 6 or 7 weeks and after tax has been pulling over a grand a week! he now has a cush £10000 deposit for a house he has saved up for 3 month lol

God yes, nearly all of the people on here who are on decent cash didn't fall straight into those positions straight away.

You can get a decent salery in any career as long as you're good at it. To get really good at it you'll probably need to enjoy it too, so go into something you enjoy.

You wouldn't believe how many people are in IT for the money but don't really get anywhere because they don't really like it and therefor don't have the first clue

gouldy87

Exact reason i didnt want to be a mechanic, because i enjoy fiddling with cars, and finding stuff out about how to fix them, but if i was doing it day in day out, i know i wouldnt want to do anything to my own on a weekend or something.

Plus the money isnt the best of the trades

I really wish i was a student with little money and care.

'More money more problems' is so true. When i was getting like £50 from the rents when i was a student it used to last me 7 nights on the piss. Now £50 can be spent on a Tuesday evening down at quiz night.

The more money i earn, the more problems came with it. The more i earn the more i wanted. Funnily enough the more i earn the more debt i was getting into....

If i was to live my life again i would do things differently but i certainly don't regret anything.

You live within your own means.

best job really is the one that you enjoy and can just about scrape by.

literally all I hear is how people hate their jobs... I bet if they were offered their dream job for half the salary they'd take it. Knowing they'd enjoy much of their life.

I know for money wise :y:

If I had you as my teacher, that'd be so feckin cool.

Wise words though Sayer, very true :)

6 pages and the highest one is £28k! With the average probably around £11-15k.

How can the average wage be £28k when I hardly know anyone earning it?

Im a qualified geotechnical engineer with 2 degrees and a master, I earnt about 35 a year but worked long hours and lost my job last Feb and havent worked since.

If you want to earn money, simple rule, work with money. Accountant, banker, lawyer for fraud cases. Big money, the kind Im never going to see!

One person earning £1.2m a yeaer in interest alone increases that figure.

What Leckie said is so true! You certainly live by your means (if not beyond) and simply buy more expensive stuff as you earn more. lol.

Its really important you enjoy work. I've always enjoyed the jobs Ive done. Im constantly being asked what I aspire to... and I honestly dont know. I just have a funny warm feeling deep down that I'll be able to do whatever Im asked to... as long as im interested enough to do it. :P

Get your qualifications and decide what interests you, but dont get hung up on deciding your career from day 1. It doesnt work like that. Also, dont get hung up on qualifications all that much. Having a degree is seen as the key to the door, but thats just it... once youre in it doesnt mean much. I've ended up doing 2 degrees during my career (both part time study) and I dont actually use any of the knowledge... except for when I tell people who work for me what to do, at times they;re supposed to draw on their uni knowledge. lol

I suppose something like investment banking would get enough money. I've heard of guys earning 200k+ before turning 30.. Boring as hell unless you really dig that sort of thing.

As said, best to enjoy what you do and have a good time along the way rather than strive for more money in a field you're just not happy with.

I'm studying Law but I'm not loving it one bit at the moment, dream job would be Motoring journalist. Not too fussed about salary, as long as its enough for a reasonable living. Nice to dream..

experience plays a factor not saying who i know earns over £40k but it does help alot

most people 30ish will be on 25k or so... i guess for the average

if they proceed onto by moving into different stages in their employment striving and flourishing dont see why they cant earn more and do more

when i was at college on the dole it was actually quite kwl even though i owed my mum and dad money got £0 from the EMA due to their earnings but anyway... it was alrite looking back

got myself a job, bought new car, paid years insurance, paid holiday, paid clothes mainly from the republic website n new trainers all the time (average joe like leckie said) and some savings

now going back to uni so i will go back into debt but like leckie said im going bk because i know i will have less worries and a less income and easier life in general (not to mention other benefits such as cheap booze and that and major half terms lol) tbh im actually looking forwards 2 going in uni will be just plain sailing in uni until i leave uni that is

even when i leave uni i dont even have a concrete plan, got a rough idea but

ema is education maintenance allowance or something like that.. you get it if ur between a certain age group and at school or college. you can get up to £30 depending on your circumstances. I used to get it in my last year of school.

Education Mantinence Allowance....you get either £10, £20 or £30 depending on your familys income...its suposed to supply your books and travel for school/college but most kids moan they only get £10 a week to spend on booze and drugs.

I get £20 EMA...goes straight on getting to school for the week as it costs me £20 a week.
£50 from my mum a month that goes on essentials...my mums gives me dinner and puts a roof over my head I buy everything else I need.
And then £5.75 an hour at work + tips, until I finish college and get Assistant Manager! Woop :)

I dont think I'm toooooo bad off tbh.

It's what the government are handing out to younger people at college who's parents earn less than 32k a year, are single parents.

I was well pissed off when I got to college to find that I couldn't get fuck all from them!I was 17 and because my household income is more than 32k I couldn't even get a discount of a bus pass!!!They were giving buss passes to kids for free if they were on EMA.

Just because my parents earn that much doesn't mean that they pay everything for me but what it does mean.

Starting to think that people who work the hardest to earn more money who pay more taxes are rewarded a lot less tgf:wall:

u can get a bursary but im not sure how tht goes for people at college... it depends on who you live with, parents wages etc same as ema but you tend to get more, i think ur meant to be spending it on expensive textbooks... not to pay your insirance like me lol

I agree with you they need to find another way to sort it out, as I cant get any more work atm I need that EMA to get to college otherwise I couldnt get in. Luckly I get it but I never got bus passes. And my mate dosent need to work because she gets £30 a week EMA to spend on booze and also a free bus pass. Some good input from people on this thread about being happy in your job.

It's like me father says:

"Chuffy, it's not about the money it's your happiness that counts. You can't take money with you."

and
"You'll never make a million working for someone else."

I could tell you about my job and how much I earn but I hate it. Maybe one day I'll just think "fuck it" and take the leap and start a fresh....

I'm classed as an Accounts Clerk/Purchase Ledger Clerk for a worldwide construction design company.

Not going into exact wages, but it's below £20k. I look after the company credit card account - so I sign people up for new cards, cancel them, send out statements, process them and deal with queries. I also process and deal with queries of staff cash expenses. It's a good job really, but the travelling is getting to me now so I'm going to sit down with my boss at somepoint and have a chat.

Some benefits with it is that it is pretty laid back aslong as the work is done, plenty of paid nights out and meals paid for. Ideally I don't want to leave, but guess we'll see what happens. I got into this by starting as a Office Junior when I was 17, progressed my way through and 4 years accounts experience. If I stay within this field (currently have an application pending for something) then I'm going to do my AAT Accounts Qualification, move up throughout the ranks so I could be a Management Account and then Finance Manager by time I'm 35-40 years old - that's ideally the route I'd go if I fail with the application.

We'll see what happens I guess.

12 miles at the minute roughly each way, but I take Ruby to nursery aswell in a morning so that adds another 6 miles on in total. I leave house at 7.10 and then arrive at work at about 8.30 - 8.45. Then going home, leave here at 5.30 and arrive home 6.15 - 6.30. I honestly don't mind driving, but it's getting worse when it's just stop/start.

Unless its changed when i was at college there was 3 catagories of EMA payment

£10 PW - Household Income good
£20 PW - Medium Household Income
£30 PW - Poor Household Income

Then you got an xmas bonus then a summer bonus, if you go back to college for the 2nd year you will get a bonus for that as well at the beginning

i for one can understand his point!

I used to work as a computer engineer in a warehouse building computers, putting fancy little lights in. Upgrading them abit and then the boss use to sell them for twice what they were worth.

As i was an apprentice i was on £88 a week. Which was shit because i used to do silly amount of hours. It worked out at £2 a hour or something silly. I enjoyed the job at first but it suddenly hit me that i was being taken for a mug. I used to earn the company £400+ a week and was only getting £88. I was working harder than any of the other staff that were on better wages.

Decided to quit and work for Pub+Carvery. Loads of people my age so i've met loads of new friends, Pay is just above minimum which i'm happy with. As i have no out goings, i go out round town 1'ce in a blue moon, no car yet, so no bills to pay etc as i'm 19 and living with the parents. Life couldn't be better. Bank account just keeps growing each week.

Student - £30 jeans
Average Joe - £70 jeans
Someone with a bit more - £200

Your never better off you just buy more expensive things in life

Get a job you enjoy dont just chase the money. Live to work not work to live. Its SHIT.

Best advice i've ever heard :y:

Respecta.

Only advice i'd add to that is what my grandparents used to say to me:

Spend abit, save abit.

50/50.

people lose there pride when they go on the dole... i dont know why

ive been on the dole for what like 2 months now? why the fuck shouldnt i claim some money back when after all when i had work as a plumber was giving over £400 a week just in tax? ....

hate when people say there pride is lost for claiming on benefits

i understand when people are in your situation, with the climate atm its no wonder its hard, I meant about people who leave school and scrownge, or work for a year and think its easier to be on the doll.

in your case i see why your on it, but chris is right, were still paying.

in my house hold the two of us both have to work to get by, with a baby too. were entitled to sweet FA because we work, this is why i get mad.we both work hard, still struggle, still pay tax, then people sit on the arses taking the money that I have earnt for my family!

I agree with him Chris and I bet so do you to a point. We both work in jobs in London on a fair wack.

Without wishing to sound like a complete bender my monthly tax, national insurance, train ticket bill is more than some people on here live off, in fact it's actually a lot higher than the amount of disposable income I have left over for me when the mortgage/bills are paid.

While I'm not over the moon at paying huge tax rates, I know that if anything happens then I will hopefully recieve enough off the state to keep me going. The reality probably is that I wouldn't and I'd be financially screwed but my point is that I wouldn't feel like a sponger just for being on benifit for a short period of time. I look after the country at the moment so it should help me when I'm out of luck, that's the way the system works.

Unfortunately instead of helping hard working people to stay afloat in a crisis the benefit system seems to be mainly abused by people who just don't want to work

i dont mind people claiming benefits if they have come across hard times but unfortunately it has become a way of life for some people,

i had a woman call me at work asking for a loan when i asked her what her occupation was she told me she was on benefits, so i asked her how much she took in on a monthly basis and her response was "probably more than you" in a sarcastic tone.

now obviously i declined her loan as she was a total bitch (and she didn't earn more than me lol) but thats what i get annoyed with though is people using benefits as a lifestyle

gouldy87
14th January 2009, 18:37
agreed on the benefits lifestyle its not fair on people working daft hours like i used to. tbh i think the benefits system is a good idea like ive just signed on as ive just been laid off but ti correct the benefits system and abuse of it i think benefits should be on a time scale unless your disabled etc unable to work due to ill health old age etc. take me for example im a 21 year old who has just been laid off. ive paid my tax for so many years so i should be entitled to benefits BUT! imo the job centre should put time scales on the amount of time your allowed to claim for. eg 6 months if you have not found work by then you should have your benefits stopped!

If your claiming Jobseeker's Allowance, at your next meeting, suggest to them that you want to go for your test. If you can find a company willing to take you on once you have your lisence, the Jobcentre may pay for your course.

I did a 3 day course as i have been on one before but only had a site lisence. Cost me £350. If you have never been on one before, the course usualy lasts 5 days and costs £550.

In my area there are ALOT of warehouses and factorys and they all use fork lift trucks. If theres no adds in the paper for one, just send your CV out with a shit hot covering letter to all the places you know use FLT and ask if theres any posistions available. I did and it took me 8 days to find a job.

If you were made redundant im sure your views on benefits would change somewhat!

If i was to be made redundant i would use my redundancy payout to live on whilst I look for another job... I would use it for the train fares to go for interviews and stuff like that... I definitely wouldn't go straight to the dole office!!

As some have mentioned... it's fine for short periods whilst you are actively searching for new employment, but some people totally abuse the benefits system and feel that they are above it all.... end up living most of their lives on benefits, in other words, spend most their lives being paid for by us tax payers, just cause of their selfish attitudes towards life!

My working day totals to 13+ hours a day once I've included travel to and from work and the extra hours I put in each day with no extra pay.... all the time I'm out of my house in those 13+ hours, there are people enjoying their lives using the money they I have just earned for them!!

I detect a sense of irony, and hipocracy, here Chris... How do you determine the difference between those that "steal" from the government from those that "steal" from their employer by spending 5/6 hours a day on Sax-P, like yourself, for instance?

You cannot say that he is stealing the company's time. You don't really know what his job entails. I can sit on here all day and do the same amount of work than if i wasn't.

Anyway.... i work for an estate agent. Doubled my wage since i started in Feb 2006. The starting wage was pretty terrible and it's long hours but i love my job most of the time! Don't really like the distance from home but other than that it's awesome!

Spending time away from company business, unless during a break, whatever it may be, is "stealing" time, hence stealing money.

The issue has begun to focus around hand-outs to non-workers. If we focus on the root-cause, which, i will accept, in some cases is institutionalised idleness, the current crisis is as a result of the ever-increasing greed of banks. Due to the incessant buying and selling of securities ("funded" by offering ridiculous "sub-prime" lending), we, the taxpayer, are paying the price - both in terms of increased unemployment and underwriting the banks.

KAPOW...

All this bullshit everyone talks about people claiming the rock and roll dole for doing jack all is pointless. As much as I hate people who use the system to live off when they don't even try to find new employment, all this chatting about it will never change it.

It's the way society is these days.
I go to work at 7am, get home at 5, 4 days a week and college on mondays 8-6.
I get £180 after Gordon Brown has taken his tax to pay all the lazy cunts in this country.

Those who claim the dole, most of them work anyway for cash in hand and will earn more than me anyway.

But I can't change the way the country is run, wish i could because I'd shoot every single one of those twats claiming the dole.

Chris :)

My heart bleeds.

You big slacker you!

£2k for travel to work? My renewal was a snip at £3360 :s:wall:

If I was to get the train it would cost me over £3700 once I'd got tickets for the tube as well.

Plus I'd have to drive to the station and pay for parking everyday, so would probably end up at well over £4K..... so getting the coach is so much of a better option for me.

You can vote at the next General Election.

I'll be voting BNP.

And everyone probably thinks I'm a nasty man, but it's only because I get sick of hearing about it? No one does anything about it.

People who claim the dole do that, because they don't want to apply for a job such as a Bin man or a council worker etc, purely because they think they are better than that. Well those 2 jobs are meant to be sort of well paid, and you get a good pension etc. But like most people will look at a bin man and think 'scruffy twat' etc. Yet again, society.

Yeh exactly.
If I got laid off work now, I'd go and be a bin man, or atleast apply for any job at the council.
I'm half expecting to get laid off being in the Building Trade.

the building trade is having a really tough time, i would know, when my partners firm were laying off staff, we were searching for jobs ready to apply, but he was one of the few to keep his job.
but his boss went and others too!

a job is a job, if it pays your wages then why does it matter if its macdonalds, a bin man or a bloody secutary?

Ill never look down to people whi actually work, because no matter how 'degrading' a job is, someone has to do it!
right?

Depends, some are actually quite sound face to face. But on the roads they have no respect whatsoever for any other person. Purely because they drive about 10tonne of machine that you dont want to get in the way of.

Our commuter coach drivers are very tempramental (sp)... one day they will be all happy and say hello as you get on, the next day they'll ignore you as you get on, then drive right up everyone's arse and cut people up etc.

see, its not like driving a car, people say 'oh your a bus driver' as if to say there all fat wankers who are lazy because they drive all day.
but its quite a challenging job at times, this is something people go 'oh no, wey would i do THAT job' and i think, why, whats wrong with it?

Well I've been gettin the same coaches to work for the last 7.5 years, so I'm use to the way they drive!

Sometimes they really suprise us and manage to sqeeze the coaches through the tightest gaps and we're like "How the fcuk did he do that without taking the side of the coach off?"... so they are very good drivers!!
