Are you in england?
De-catting your car will make it fail. And the laws have changed on silencers recently, so i dont know whats happening there.

It is possible to get a car to pass the MOT with a decat pipe, BUT you gotta make the engine incredibly low on emissions which is near impossible!

So in other words it wont pass with a decat pipe on as the emisions will be to high because of the decat pipe

Please dont think that just because someone has a fast car that they enjoy flying round the streets........
also like said, get a 4-2-1/4-1 manifold, decat pipe (preferably a straight through pipe and a good back box.
Also for induction noise go for an open filter
and 99.9% of the time a car with a decat will NOT pass an MOT :)

If he's not interested in going fast and only wants a 'nice' sound, why is everyone suggesting de-cat?
Changing the manifold and centre pipe, leaving the original backbox on will give a nice rumble.

Its hard to make a car sound like it has power when it does not. Most boy racers just start ripping all the silencing off but really this sounds absolutely nothing like a performance car. Stainless steel gets a nice hum when your idling that can give a illusion of power. As people have said a bit more induction noise helps but be cartful as just sticking a open filter on will just sound like a wet fart. Best is to keep it quiet as just a bit of the right rumbling or dull growling will always sound like that car has potential. Where as most boy racers just end up blurting out yes I'm driving a shit cars that's not running right and yes I'm not getting any further away from you even though I'm revving the tits off thing.

I'd say a Magnex twin box system with decat would be ideal - video here (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=h3pnuwMglec). When MOT time comes, simply swap the decat pipe back over for the CAT.
