First off, how easy is it to remove the cat pipe, replace it with a sweeet straight pipe and replace it with the cat pipe, for instance when you got an MOT?

pain in the arse or an hour job which is worth it?

im also looking for advice on 4-2-1 manifolds, the benefits, where i can get a relatively cheap second hand one...?

any comments much appreciated guys

Should be a relatively easy task to do the swap, and as you have a mk1, then any mani will fit straight on without relocating the oil filter, doesnt really matter which brand you go for, but raceland is probably the cheapest, then janspeed, and finally supersprint. Dunno where you would find a cheap second hand one, best off just buying a new one,
