Headwork

Ok now i got a bare head i wanna send off to have the valve guides done and ported and polished Is there any one off here good at it. It ont be going on a standard engine before anyone says.

Its easy enough, i would do it but im too busy to do anything atm, best to de-carbonise the head then P&P the head and have new valve guides done after.

You found anywhere to do it mate?

depends where you go mate, i did a mates for 120 quid including all new valve guides

is there big gains to be had,just wondering as im going 16v shortly and if it does give could gains may try to see if any one in my area does it

first of all its not easy to do properly.
avoid all back garden style jobs.

take it to a reputable engine builder company and tell them what spec your engine is.

NO it wont make hardly any difference unless you have fairly large duration/lift cams and trick exhaust system.

on standard engine no, you need cams to make most of it.

im going 708s or ph3 and obv all the breathing mods,how much can be had 5-10bhp? does it give more power all the way to the red line

i doubt it will give that much.
on a 160bhp engine it will probably relieve about 5bhp at most.
headwork will help it breath better at the top end so most of the gains will be there.:P

well if thats all your going you want you want your headwork to match your cams. not overdo the headwork if it will be no use. as danni said a reputable company, dont listen to its easy enough. you need a flow bench for starters

If your directing that at me it isnt a back garden job, i do it at work, i dont see the reason in charging 500 plus for a few hours of my own time.

it wasnt aimed at anyone. just advice form my own experience.

A garage near me, we do all kinds of engine work, from heads, to full rebuilds, rebuild gearboxes and do alot of bodywork, were only an indipendant garage.

do you have a flow bench there?

its easy enough to do port matching and stuff like that but when it comes to change the shape of the ports and the combustion chambre it takes a lot of experience to get it "right". im not saying in any way your not capable of doing it but people have spent years getting the desired flow from these heads.. look at QEP and GMC for example. thats why they charge a lot of money. its not the time taken to do it but the knowledge of knowing what to do for a specific engine spec.:P
