Hey, I would eventully like to get performance cams on my VTR. Im just wondering though, do i just have to buy the cams and thats it so its a straight swap? or do i have to upgrade and buy more things? how much will it cost for labour to fit on average at a garage?

thanx

It depends how wild the cams are..you can get a mild cam that will not need a remap but for larger performance gains get a wilder cam and remap
Your looking at around £300 for cams and £500 for a re-map mate
Hope that helps:y:

thankx, yeah i would be getting it remapped, is that £300 with fitting or without? and just the cams by themselves so i dont need anything else? do you know any cams makes or models i can look at pal?

Around 300 for the cams. Have a look on Kam Racing(Stick it in google)

cool thanx mate, would they have to be remapped straight away? and will damage my enegine if not? because i probably wont have all the money at once lol

I dont think you would damage the engine its just that it would cut out at the lights etc. I personally would save and get both done at the same time. Thats what im going to do when i get mine

Ye mate get the breathing mods done first. Like air filter and exhaust. Then cam remap:y:

seen some cams but it says will give a performance increase of 11bhp with breathing mods?
so if ive got a full exhaust system, induction kit i will only get 11bhp from it? or will i get the 11bhp from the cams then abit more from the breathing mods?
cheers

The VTR only uses 1 camshaft my man.

Look at companies like catcams, newman, piper etc. www.kamracing.co.uk is your friend.

Before fitting one though it is always best to have uprated breathing mods like others have said, full exhaust system with manifold and a good panel filter/induction kit. Maybe even get your throttle body ported and polished too.

You can get ones that dont need a map but to be honest what is the point, you wont see enough of a gain to keep you satisfied.

You want one that will need a map atleast. Then depending on how serious you are about you could look at one that will need a map and uprated internals. When mapped properly with uprated internals and a cam to suit you will get a good result.

If it were me, get a cam that needs a map but doesnt need uprated internals so you get a good gain but at a lower cost as mine is my daily driver!

are PH2s on a VTR any good? av never heard of anyone having them, they seem like a good compromise, how much of a gain can they give?

you want a vernier pulley and new cambelt

since you are fitting a new cam you are probs best to buy a new headgasket and change that since you have to take the head off, and give it a bit of a service etc

how much do new head gaskets costs? thing is i have to think about fitting costs too becuase when it comes to engines i dont know anything but how to change spark plugs and induction kits!

new headgasket is about 40quid possibly abit less man

yer it would be bit less than 40, im sure last time i checked they are about 20quid, you can get good one from GMC for just under 30 i think including vat, thats for a 1.5mm gasket but it would be no more than 30, then for a service it would cost around 50 or 60 quid thats for oil, oilfilter, fuel filter, cambelt kit, gaskets for exhaust and inlet, so for the full service it would cost around 80quid i should think

for the gasket you could go gsf i used to work there and its about 25 to 30 quid i think for a head set which has all gaskets - head, inlet and exhaust, new stem seals and things like that so could save a couple quite buyin the kit

its def worth doing if you going to be doing this, because like i said you have to take off the head anyway so it makes sense really, cause if you dont know how to do it later on after youve cammed it and want a service you will have to pay more cause they would have to take head off then to put new head gasket on if you get me so in long run could save you a bit of money

does that make sense lol

and hope it helps
