View Full Version : vtr, strip out or not?
wicked-vtr

right, i cant decide what path to go down with my car, leather seats, nice install ect ect or strip it out.
it is my daily driver but im tempted by the performance gains of a properly lightweight car, i dont really drive long distances often anyway, and having no back seats is a good excuse for not giving lifts :p
anyway, was wondering if the performance will increase dramatically or is it not really worth it? and will the car be all cold/loud/rattley if i strip it? any advice or views from people would be good :)

12th February 2009, 15:48
only strip it if you need to.
otherwise you'll look like a tit
Danr
12th February 2009, 15:49
Agreed with pjm. If you're doing track days all the time and the car won't be used on the road much then yeah, why not strip it.
I couldn't have a stripped car personally.

i didnt notice a difference at all on my old vtr
its louder
and reminds me of being in a van
i would only do it again if i were using it on track tbh

sounds like a bit of a crap idea then, yeah a stripped out sax with a cage would make me look like a poser lol.
if theres no real gains its not worth it anyway. id only do it if it made the car significantly faster and better handling.
Berg
12th February 2009, 15:56
it would probably make it more twitchy than better handling?
wicked-vtr
12th February 2009, 16:01
possibly? i thought less weight would mean less body roll ect ect
Berg
12th February 2009, 16:06
but no weight in the back and all weight up front...
good suspension setup will mean less body roll i think
im only basing it on what my vtr was like stripped
wicked-vtr
12th February 2009, 16:12
yeah good point, all the weight (engine) over the front and nothing in the back probably isnt good, lots of understeer lol? or not enough grip on the back wheels so slidy/twitchy lol. didnt think about that :S
ricksimmonds
12th February 2009, 16:15
wouldnt bother tbh. ive done it to mine and it handle better, really light and nimble and so easy to control if the back end steps out (practically corrects itself) but tbh i dont think its really any quicker (just ALOT louder) and after the initial novelty period of about 2 weeks has worn of you wish you didnt throw all the interior trim away like i did lol
ricksimmonds

can be a little twitchy, but on the whole the handling is better, feels so much more chuckalbe
toms_vtr
12th February 2009, 17:09
its worth doing if you can put up with the noise and it being very very cold in the morning lol
Sparco_Tom
12th February 2009, 17:11
i love stripped cars, cold doesnt bother me. I love hearing every little noise all the gravel and stuff hitting the underside of the car :)
Jaytee
12th February 2009, 17:50
i love my vtr stripped. Just need to get my vts engine in it and save up for a better suspension setup and it will be more or less where i want it. I love the noises you get and how you can feel much more of what the car is doing.
AlexB
12th February 2009, 17:57
i would say no (and i strip every car i own tbh)
most people pussy strip there cars and leave all the heavy stuff in
a properly stripped car is heavily impractical
youve got no carpets so in the wet the floors well slippy to get in and out
you get more noise
get a few good smells of petrol and oil
no heater
no electrics
and unless you even it out by removing weight up front (in the engine bay) it gets rather unbalanced and twitchy
a cage will even the weight but is a bad idea in a road car tbh
Karl
12th February 2009, 17:58
i do like 3 miles a day, thats it.

rofl
i just hate the guys who claim removing a rear bench is stripping
i proved that stripping can make a massive difference n a car with my 1.1 but tbh that thing was beyond what 99% or people would do to there car
atm i still class my gti as not fully stripped and i only have a dash a little sound deadening behind and one seat and harness
its shit like the airbag ecu and sterio wiring ect that all add up
with 4 people we could nearly pick the whole car up off the ground
but driving round in it was a pain
it leaked it froze up it had no heater no central locking no nothing
and people who got in the car (when i put a passenger seat in) were just like wtf and wanted to get out
sorry about the mini rant but the whole stripped fashion pisses me off
if your gonna use the car by all means strip it out
but if your doing it cause you like the track look your an idiot imo
Ryan

To everyone saying you'll look a twat if its stripped but not actually used on a track wtf are you on?!
1. how will anyone that sees you out and about know whether you do or do not track your car? answer: they wont, so you wont look a twat based on whether you actualy track the car or not...you'll look a twat because your driving a shitty saxo with no interior thinking your a 'rude boy' (to the wider public)
2. who decided they had the right to decide anyone stripping their car that does not use a track is a pleb? if someone wants to strip their car in order to make it more fun to drive on the road then they can, its their car, stop trying to impose your dilluded views on the members of sax-p

i did have point three at the time but i was writing the post at work and forgot it half way through lol
whos claiming to be a track/rallly slag?
your changing the context. no one is claiming to be anything. When someone asks/considers stripping their car, its to make it more fun/enjoyable to drive on track or road, you'll agree that you can still enjoy the benefit of a stripped car without being a track slag. noone is claiming to be anything but they always get the YOU WILL LOOK A TWAT from a certain few track 'hardcores' who incorrectly believe we care what they think!!
no offence intended but people say YOU WILL LOOK A TWAT, well no, tbh you wont, you'll look EXACTLY the same as the real track 'slags' do on the road and if a certain few 'track hardcores' think you'll look a pleb, its nothing to lose any sleep over...thats what i meant, i just fail to see how you will look a twat when you have stripped your car to make driving more enjoyable and are not claiming to be anything but a kid stripping his car as it feels better to drive?

you used the word 'hate' to describe someone that strips their car but doesnt track it? mate your pathetic
in that case you HATE quite a few people on here, including me and for no reason atal except we have made changes to OUR cars for a tangible benefit to road driving, you twat

For a start buckets and harnesses can effectively be unsafe without a roll cage due to the nature inwhich you are held in :P

yes i do hate people who strip their car and yes i do think twat. reason - i drive sensible on the road, and go nuts on a track. if you have a striped car and dont track it you must drive like a twat on the road otherwise there is no point. an you think you are lewis h on the road, and that philosophy killed two of best mates last year so yes i do think - twat. and that opinion will never change

because i prefer the characterstics of how the car drives when it is stripped, did it first just to try it out as i was intrigued and liked it so didnt replace the interior (only done the back but stripped the back properly not just rear bench and that)
it also performs better when i do decide to have the occasional blast down country lanes etc
if you pretend you never put your foot down on public roads your lying

i genuinly dont drive fast on roads, but i do take ya point about handling etc, why put cermaic discs for a 911? if you do the speed limit.... i just think peoples reasoning is wrong when they do it thats all, i think most people jus do it so they have people saying or thinking they do trackdays etc when they arnt ballsy enough to do one

duno about easy, i couldnt get the rear seat belt out of the the hole it goes through on the rear panel so i just sawed the panel in half to get the belt out, at that point i didnt want to removed the seat belts as i didnt no whether i wanted to but the interior back in but once the saw came out it sorta made the decision for me lol
if you remove the rear belts (couple of nuts) the panels just unclip so will be easy enough

I'm going to be stripping mine soon, once i get funds for buckets and harnesses etc. because it'll handle better, break better, look better, perform better, and mpg is better.

its not the seat, the C pilar or rear end if it crumples is where hes mounting the seatbelt to lol! so if this mangles so does the belt

ye but if i get hit from the side where the cage is mounted itll crumple there. so anyway there is a possibility of them not workin, and does anyone wanna give me a grand for a cage??? cos i got no money, show cages look cool and i think they would help more than nothin if i roll anyway.
Ryan

show cages look cool and i think they would help more than nothin if i roll anyway.
you are very wrong.
How do you expect it to help in a roll, they are piss weak, and dont mount substancially, if you roll they are actually more dangerous due to the fact that they can snap and then fly about EASYER!
Ryan
13th February 2009, 18:59
ye but if i get hit from the side where the cage is mounted itll crumple there. .
Dont need to mount it there, Mount them to the rear seat areas, both of them! This area is stronger due to the fuel cell being around there init ;)
Cages dont crumple very easily either. Hence why when you roll alot of the drivers safety cell is intact

They are not strong, hence why they dont have FIA/MSA approval ;)

Except I wont be selling my SD cage thats going in, and the omp is sold allready ;)
How do you expect it to do anything substancial, when its design isnt for safety.
Think about it, the type of metal used, the mounting points etc.. Like I said chances are it is more DANGEROUS in a crash than helpful for safety.
saxotourdecorse
13th February 2009, 19:17
any saxo that rolls is potentially fatal. and i dont expect it to anythin but i am a poor student lol. how much you pay for sd cage, i gotta buy new brakes first :( but they do llok good anyway. better than normal cages i think.
Ryan
13th February 2009, 19:22
doesnt matter what they look like, Im not posting to be a cunt, im posting because of the safety issue.
My sd cage i got second hand, its £845 new.
Can get OMP cages for £4-500.
brakes you can get gti-6/266mm set ups for not alot from scrappys init :P (im a student to)
A proper cage will have a safety cell for the occupants, which is why a saxo rolling with a cage isnt a major issue interms of safety, just see foggys progress thread

Cant see it being much, if any more than standard, depending how far you go with the strippage.
But it'd be safer and handle better, so it'd still end up quicker anyway. ;)
