my 1.6 8valve 2003 engine is tappy as hell loud and quite embarassing just wondered do it affect the peformance of the engine im gettin the tappets ajdusted this saturday.. my mate [mechanic]reckons you lose quite a bit of power from the valves opening too late due to the gap between tappet and valve stem or something like that he said can any1 tell me if this is right or is he talkin wet????..

Incorrect valve clearances can reduce the performance of the engine - I'd get them sorted asap. I take it there's plenty oil in it?

Nah he's right, valves open and close too soon and it runs like a bag of shit but is quiet, well i think its that way, its been a while since i've had to worry about tappets!

Valves on vtr's and other 8v models have adjustable tappets which do work themselves loose so do need tighening now and again. When they are loose the engine gets very loud and tapety, if you will excuse the pun. Tightenen them with a feeler gauge and a haynes manual. Theres also i guide on here if you want to do it yourself. Dont know for sure but i presume they loose power as they arnt opening and closing at the right times. Vts's dont have this problem as they have hydralic tappets which adjust themselves.
Will be doing my tappets on the weekend as they have been running loose for a while now oops :wall:
Guide to do it yourself is here:

I tried a couple of times to do mine and the car never sounded right. In the end, I had manic motors do it - quiet as anything now. :y:
