Hiiii,
I just wondered if anyone has any advice from experience on how to get a VTR to sound like a rally car (high pitched and raspy with popping etc)
I personally don't like these deep and throaty exhausts that people have.....like i said i want mine to be as high pitched as possible and raspy with popping all the time :>
At the moment i have a raceland 4-2-1 fitted, i removed the middle silencer from the standard centre pipe and have a 3" Ashley backbox (which i bought as everyone said they were raspy) However, me being as i am, i want more :>------dont get me wrong, it sounds good, but i want it better! it hasnt all been on the car that long so it might need time to "wear in" however im worried this will create a deeper tone rather than a raspier tone once its "weared in"???
can anyone help me with maybe choosing a different backbox to achieve the sound i'm looking for?
Also, is the tone created more to do with the size and design of the tailpipe, or the size and design of the silencer etc????
any help will be greatly appreciated,
thanks,
Mike

you have a decat?

option 1
bodies
wild cams
hicomp pistons
etc
option 2
turbo it with anti-lag
failing that make do with a standard saxo engine and an aftermarket exhaust.

bigger tailpipes in my experience are deeper sound wise. If you have a smaller diameter one the gases exit faster and rasp more.
do a search for cars with our supersprint race system fitted. There are some good videos of cars with them on.
to get the full effect though you need to spend a lot on the engine

Supersprint are probably one of the best makes to go for if you want raspy and smaller tailpipes are better for raspiness and performance on a n/a engine. A 2" supersprint backbox will sound raspier especially with a decat. Have you looked on kamracing's site?

you can get them to pop quite well and spit flames with the system youve got plus a decat and a ram air induction like a BMC CDA with a force duct

4-2-1 manifold, straight-thru exhaust and supersprint backbox should sound raspy-ish?

I had a supersprint 2" race system connected to the supersprint mani and i found it very raspy and pops alot with the odd flame ;)
BUT ive have now gone back to my old exhaust, a powerflow system and its alot more raspy and pops more and more flames :D
IMO i would go to powerflow and let them make you a custom one like mine and they build it to how you want it...expensive but worth it :D

Could always trya nd use some higher octane fuel? And octane booster etc
Most proper rally cars will use higher octane fuel.

i think mines pretty raspy,
got a supersprint 4-2-1
supersprint full exhaust system 2"
s1 rallye inlet manifold
and a CatCams 4901202 fast road camshaft
not mapped yet
sounds like a beast, in the process of uploading some video's

throttle bodies, wild camshaft
2inch exhaust systen, de-cat and mani.
imo just a supersprint exhaust sounds nothing like a real rally car.

A lot of money would have to be spend, as already stated.
Mines raspy just with the box. ;)

and hows that going to change the sound of the car?
Make it backfire/pop?
Just a thought, saw a puma rally car at riponion stages a few years ago and the fella was using 112 RON petrol. And its nickname is "the popping puma"

lol, they dont use that fuel to get it to pop.
JamesR

i thought the fact they used high octane fuel was what made them backfire? because not all the fuel is burnt and goes into the hot exhaust?

nar they pop coz theyre that higly tuned the fuel explodes in the exhaust, most will say really wild cams are the best thing for gettin your car to pop, but then you require bodies etc to run which are also good, my popd quite abit before with mild steel 4-2-1 sportex race tube and piper 4.5 stainless backbox with green induction, now i have ph3 and s1 inlet 2 and it pops like fuk, was always really really raspy aswell, exhaust note sems to have changed alot since the cams went in tho, not sure if i like it anymore, but thumbs up to the throaty roar from the inlet,

simple Throttle bodies, ph4 or ph5 cams, close ratio straight cut box, omp or supersprint straight through exhaust, 4-2-1/4-1 manifold, an intensive engine map.
couple that with lots of head work, and uprated crankshafts, con rods, pistons.
then you will be getting somewhere near that rally sound. oh and £15-20k lighter

would not fitting a better lighter fly wheel make it sound more like one as it would rev higher alot faster?

it would certaintly help in the right direction
