View Full Version : NSFW : 106 XSi track car: back up to date

Hi all
finally pulled my finger out and got my arse on here so here goes.....
well about easter of this year the old man spotted a steal on 106 owners
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee279/westieSP/DSC00041-3.jpg
was a 106 Xsi 1.4 at 115k with plenty of new OE parts on
when we got it though we noticed it was in some serious need of attention!!
so i completely stipped out the interior and noticed a few more spots that required a bit of TLC
front drivers inner wing, 2 drivers seat mounting points (both inner) and handbrake captive nuts were in need of TLC from the welder.
Once these were sorted the interior i wanted to keep went back in to end up like this
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee279/westieSP/DSC00046-1.jpg
and a good service took place at the same time
Then it was MOT time which it passed with flying colours :D
it was now time to get cracking with a few bits and bobs i had at the time
i fit my pugsport 2 inch system along with some hardened rubber mounts for it
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee279/westieSP/DSC00047-1.jpg
aswell as a raceland 4-2-1 mani and my adapted induction piping from my westie and a few other bits and bobs
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee279/westieSP/DSC00048-1.jpg
unfortunately the breather kept having oil spat into it so it was time to fit a catch tank
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee279/westieSP/DSC00139.jpg
then with a free weekend i thought sod it and broke out the tools again and knew it was about time i had my suspension fitted!!
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee279/westieSP/DSC00139.jpg
from this mess
add all these tasty goods (B8 dampers, faulkner 155lb springs and some Grp N top mounts)
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee279/westieSP/DSC00142.jpg
to give this
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee279/westieSP/DSC00144.jpg
also thought it would be rude not to pop this arb in for the time being
19mm ------ 24mm
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee279/westieSP/DSC00146.jpg
feels very nippy for a 1.4 and also nice and firm now the suspension has been sorted temporarily ;)
still sooooo many parts to fit aswell :D

Finally .... Been waiting for this progress thread to pop up. Looks like some good progress so far. Car looked in very good nick when i saw it.
Looks like your xsi suffered from the same problem as my xsi did. Luckily the handbrake and drivers seat mounting point had already been done when i got my grubby mitts on it.
Do you plan on removing the dash and chopping the wiring like on your westie?

16th March 2009, 21:36
well this weekend was rather productive
managed to remove my old suspension setup of the 155lb custom faulkners, bilstein B8's and Grp N top mounts in exchange for some 175lb custom faulkners, Grp N Bilstein front dampers and some Grp N top mounts
at the same time i ave the strut itself a lick of paing after a sand down to tidy it up :)
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee279/westieSP/DSC00513.jpg
and since the tools were out and the calipers and discs had come off it would be rude not to improve the stopping power :)
so some 266mm brakes were fitted with drilled and grooved discs and a set of std. pads to save the mintex ones for the ring
also a set of braided hoses
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee279/westieSP/DSC00511.jpg
then before the wheels were fit we fit my repainted lower strut brace
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee279/westieSP/DSC00514.jpg
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee279/westieSP/DSC00515.jpg
then i went to see the lads at the garage and help them finish a lowering job
i took this while i was there:

i meant on my back as i hurt it snowboarding and all the little vibrations run straight through me
pot holes hurt!!
the rear needs to be stiffer!!! and lower! and with better brakes!!
AlexR
17th March 2009, 00:51
I definitely wouldn't fit a bigger front ARB. 19mm is more than sufficient! Harder springs, softer ARBs.
Seeing as you have grpNs, some 200lb front springs 240mm, with 21mm torsion bars, 22mm rear arb(no bigger) and the 19mm front ARB should be sweet!
Ryan
17th March 2009, 00:54
I never found pot holes to be to bad with the saxo...
i guess my recaros cushion it better than your seats must.

wont be going stiffer springs as its more a road car atm
as for torsion bars i cant afford them :(
im running 24mm rear arb, what is the problem with running this?

Also if it was mapped on a furio it will be terrible on the xsi if you did wire it in... different head, inlet manifold, compression ratio, rev limit and a higher fpr

I honestly think a bigger cc is a far healthier and cheaper option leaving more scope for improvement. The 'Z' stamp cam in the TU3 engine is already fairly hairy and unless the new cam you have is bigger enough to warrant tdc clearance issue you'll be lucky to see 3-4 bhp from it. Rallye inlet is a good un, if you fit it right you can get away without a re map sometimes. But still, i'd go for a 1.6 8v/16v everytime! I've been there and done that with the 1.4 and the 1.6 8v and now i would never go back!

it ran away from my breathed gti a few months back and that was 137 bhp (proven in a maha)

his head was a rallye head with newman 280 cam in and rallye inlet
the worst that can happen is it doesnt work!! if so ill have to get my ECU mapped for my particular setup :(

well its about time an update was done as a fair new bits have been fitted :)
we start off where we left.... ALLOYS 15"
once they were all sanded down to remove all the nicks and curbing they were filler primered up (left), this was then sanded down and primered then sanded down again to give a good clean finish (right).
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee279/westieSP/DSC00578.jpg
while we were waiting for the paint to arrive we had a free day to do what we could on the car so the night before we got this ready \/
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee279/westieSP/DSC00555.jpg
so off came the rear beam and unfortunately the chassis was not in a good way so i took a wire brush and a tin of hammerite to the rear pan
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee279/westieSP/DSC00557.jpg
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee279/westieSP/DSC00563.jpg
once this was done the beam was mounted with my powerflex bushes fitted :)
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee279/westieSP/DSC00560.jpg
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee279/westieSP/DSC00561.jpg
then the arms were fitted and set to my desired ride height ( lowered 45mm ), level with the front due to the rear being stripped
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee279/westieSP/DSC00565.jpg
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee279/westieSP/DSC00567.jpg
it stayed like this for a week while we waited for some good weather, during this time the spare wheel was relocated to inside the carand the cage was removed

http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee279/westieSP/DSC00584.jpg
the wheels were then painted and the tyres fitted (195/45/15) and balanced up
before they were fitted a polish was in order for the wheels and the car to give this

looks good mate! question for you when you took apart the rear beam. how did you manage to set it back up right?
did you have measurements beforehand of the original height?

Told you the monza's looked sexy in black ;) (still need to get a set)
The car looked as awesome as ever on sunday and sounded spot on. 3 wheeled around so many corners/roundabouts, loved being behind just to hear the pugsport ;) Especially in the tunnel drove alongside purely for that reason.
Practical performance in the park here sam comes? :p
Still need to remove my cage :err:

there not bad little cars but the gearbox is what makes it quick

He was halfway through writing it before shooting off to work, expect them tonight i'd imagine!
Ste - How did you fit the vts dials to yours? Im assuming they arent a straight fit or is the cabling already on the loom in for the speedo?

Will keep my eyes peeled for the update. The vts dials use the original 5 slid on plugs the xsi clocks used but to get the speedo working you will need a electronic VSS on the gearbox (Instead of cable driven) 3 wires are required to get the speedo working properly (Live, earth and signal wire to clocks).
I am going to be popping to the scrappy in the next week or so to get a VSS and the plug that goes into it.

end product was this...

Just need to go and unleash the xsi on the ring!
