I have a mk1 vtr, and was wondering what turbo kit goes on, where would l get one and roughly cost wise? Or would l be better off putting a 106gti lump in it?
Cheers

can of worms tbh mate
a turbo kit can give big power but will cost thousands
a gti lump is 120hp and a few hundred quid
but can be tuned on top of that
its all down to what you want mate

turbo the 8v mate dont go 16v every tom, dick and harry is going 16v.
a turbo 8v is going to be much faster then any vts, even a turbo vts its all about how the power is laid down tbh when your talking big figures it starts coming down to traction etc etc

what sort of prices am l lookin at for the conversion parts, l can fit them my self?
What about the 409 sri engine and running gear they have about 150bhp?
Gti lump is the easy option really and the cheapest too like

gti would be easier but after that your mods are going to be twice as expencive, say for example if you want to cam it. its twice as much as 8v.
2 cams, 2 vernier pulleys
turbo the 8v ftw

id go for the 16v lump, cheaper option and if your not satisfied with the power you can then tune the 16v.
120bhp is a better base than 90bhp

For the price, id go for the VTR turbo lump. At a super cheap low budget option you could get 150bhp, if you prowl ebay for a while and do the work yourself you could get the lot done for around £700. But that would be on ultra low boost and personally id get it setup boosting into the engine bay until you can get it on some rollers and check the fueling and check to see if its detonating and slowly nock the boost up using a boost controller from 1psi and i wouldnt go above 6psi without a decomp plate.
For a VTS lump about 150bhp your looking at around £1000 give or take a few hundred depending on labour etc
Decent engine, ecu, box and loom can be got for around £250 now!. A set of cams that dont necessitate a remap (PH3's) are about £300. A Manifold is about £200 depending on spec but you can get em sub £150. Coupled with a decent filter and exhaust system and you could reach upto 150bhp. A good LIVE Remap is around £400 which could get you another 10~bhp.
A VTR Turbo;
T2 Fiesta RS Turbo SAAB 9000 turbo / S13 turbo (6-8psi depending on compression) - £100- £200 2nd hand (6psi seems to get around 150bhp)
2.5 BAR MAP sensor - £20
Decomp plate - £150 or repair head gasket.
Intercooler - £100
Thermostat'd Oil Cooler - £120
MF2 Injector driver - £250 - (although i know theres a way of wiring a 5th injector into the existing loom but not sure how to do it)
Oil/Boost Piping - £100 - 200
more labour and nigly shitty parts needed for the turbo though. And a good welder for the manifold and sump if your going budget.
But you can go for low comp pistons bigger injectors and a higher boost setting with a standalone ecu, a budget option is the megasquirt. But thats at least another grand doing it cheap.
The downside of the N/A S engine is you dont really get into the power until round 4k, but once your there you can easily stay in the power. The upside is when you want more power its available just at a cost.
The downside of the R engine is you can't really get that much power without spending alot, which is when you'll wish you had the S engine as you'd get more from it. The upside is you can get the same power as any S engine without bodies or boost, by sticking a turbo on and sort the compression out with les cash but still alot.

some good info there ste mate. By the sounds of things the 8v turbo will be a better option really. I no a couple of lads who can weld and help me with the fitting with the conversion. So hopefully after summer l can put her away and start work on it.

The important thing is to keep it all cool. The intercooler should be decent and the oil cooler should be too. Check out cobbers' vtr turbo, i think he managed it for £500, without an intercooler or oil cooler.
Also sophia bush is very knowledgable when it comes to turbo setups.
