View Full Version : Actual performance exhausts

Okay, I have a situation of getting my cars power up again. i have to do it cheap as possible.
I will list what I have, and what options I think I have.
VTS backbox
VTS cat
VTR centre section
This together causes the exhaust not to fit properly.
Ashley competition full system, backbox, middle silencer and decat.
Random VTS cat.
I think I am loosing too much back pressure. What I think I might do then is stick on a centre pipe (either standard or straight) with the cat and Ashley box.
Questions are, will the Ashley box fit a standard centre.
Will a decat cause so much pressure loss I am down on power.
What other real performance exhausts out there? The Ashley sounds absolutely amazing, its just pure power..

Supersprint are supposed to give good gains. Could get the ashley backbox, with a supersprint centre section and mani? :y:

I have a raceland mani already...
The previous owner bodged all the car back together..

Is the ashley straight through from the manifold back?
I'm no expert on exhausts but I beleive that the sysytem needs a box in the exhaust system somewhere - hence I bought a boxed de-cat - something to do with pulsing.
IMO look at a system with a slightly larger bore, and a box.
I've just fitted a btb, having had a straight through system in the past with a piper 4" slash cut exhaust, and the btb just seems to let the engine breath, and the engine just wants to pull through the rev's.
The btb has a box where the cat should be, and a box in the centre section.

Sportex are quite good, could get the centre section and backbox and it would only cost about £140. :y:

Janspeed 4-2-1, Supersprint decat straight through centre section, and Supersprint back box.
That's about as good as it gets on these cars.

Argh.
I dont have cash to blow on a full new system, people dont seem to read that part.
I have the Ashley system, and I have a bodged 'standard' system. With what I have and the sale value of the parts + £50 where can I get.
Manifold is okay, I quite like the backbox, so its just everything in the middle.
Performance cat? I am loosing back pressure causing a drop in performance. I am 99% sure that this is the case. So a boxed decat / performance cat?

are you sure your losing power because of the exhaust?
putting the cat back on will lose you 5bhp straight away, you should have enough back pressure with the ashley system anyway, also car will sound well different with the cat back on.
do you know how much power it is down by?
what does it drive like?

It was on a Dyno yesterday, made 115...
After speaking to the Dyno owners and a lot of people we have put it down to the induction and exhaust. The induction is the Raceland jobby, with a Green filter, but I am sure that wouldnt cause too much of a drop.
We are all certain there is a lack of back pressure.
Its nice, but there is a huge flat spot between 3-4k. So you say putting the cat on looses you 5, well fitting this has potentially lost me 5.
Thing is, in a thread on Pug306 we filmed our 30-70 times, I did mine when I fitted the raceland and made around 5.5 seconds on a stop watch. then after fitting the exhaust it has been done again and its getting 6+ everytime. I know this is noway an actual comparison, I just thought the first time was wrong but its all starting to add up. I think the noise is more of a placebo for the lack of power.

well i have heard of vts's losing power due to induction kits and exhausts, i have nearly the same system as you but on a cammed VTR and i make about 130bhp on the rr. i had a massive rise after fitted my supersprint mani and decatted it due to my cat being in the mani.
but when i refitted the cat and moved it to the centre pipe i had flat spots everywhere.
might just be a case of trial and error.
blowing somewhere possibly on an off chance.

Its not blowing.. I have been reading on the site since I joined that VTS's seem to react very well to slight breathing mods, so I was hoping for 125-130. It certainly felt faster before the ashley the more I think about it. Hmm.

Try another exhaust and see how it feels? Maybe someone can lend you one for the day?

someone down this way loss power after fitting a BMC filter. could be the ashley, shame you can't borrow someones system that's what i've done in the past.
Jorge-

Haha, anyone local want to lend me a system?

I have a stock manifold, and full supersprint system with no cat and straight-through single silencer.
It's got barely any back pressure, and it is not losing power because of it.
I seriously doubt your car will gain bhp from putting blockages in the exhaust.
Gas speed is important at low engine speed (<3000) but above this it just needs to get it out.

mine is pulling rather nicely at the moment... and it still has a cat in
raceland 4-2-1, cat, magnex centre box, magnex back box.
Jorge-
16th March 2009, 19:50
I havent checked a thing.
What is the best way to check the cam timing?
