so your mate "mentioned" tappets ?

why do you want new ones

adjusting is easy, do it yourself. if ill do it for you for a small price, where in southampton are you.

tappets are rarely wrong, but if they are set wrong, then adjusting them can make a big difference.

The 8V engines have adjustable tappets. It's not just a case of tightening them down - they need to be adjusted to specific clearances. The Haynes has a good guide but it's often quite tricky to get them adjusted right, a reputable garage should be able to do it for around £30.

When ever you set tappets it best to have the engine stone cold.
Idealy do them 1st thing in a morning.

use a feeler guage to get correct height.

as said above, get yourself a set of feeler gauges.. then check a haynes manual for the correct height on standard tappets/cams

A ford forum would be your best bet, early ford engines are notorious for noisy "tappets". Wouldnt have a clue how much to replace them.

no worries mate, but there are alot of noises that engines make, and people blame the "tappits" so be careful dude.

tappets dont really tend to go out, or loosen, unless they have been played with. not in my experience anyway.
