Hey all,

Wanting to buy cams for my VTR have been doing a bit of research and stuff but still not really sure. I have the early silvertop engine (90bhp) could anyone recommended some decent cam that would be good in my engine at the moment the current spec of my engine is:
Janspeed 4-2-1 mild steel mani
raceland induction kit with green filter
sportex full system inc decat.

Looking to buy cams then get it remapped to suit all mods thats already on the car so if anyone could recommend some good cams (looking to spend around £300) that would be really helpful

thanks dan.

Depends really mate, there are Newman cams or Catcams.

PHASE 1 (PH1) ROAD CAMSHAFT
This is a camshaft that would be used for road use and will normally run with standard carb or injection system and can be fitted without
additional tuning equipment. It is meant for town use and will have a smooth tick-over and will give its increase in power in the low midrange.
Other modifications to the engine will increase the performance of this cam.

PHASE 2 (PH2) FAST ROAD CAMSHAFT
This is a camshaft for increasing mid-range of the engines and is meant for mild competition use and where the driver requires an
increase of power in the mid-range without suffering too much loss of power in the low-range. The tick-over will be heavier than a standard
engine. The fuel system may have to be modified and the cam will work to its optimum with modifications to the cylinder head,
inlet/exhaust system and possibly the management system.

PHASE 3 (PH3) FAST ROAD RALLY
This type of camshaft is really the limit for normal road use. It will require fuel system and management modifications. It will have a
noticeable loss of low-down power and the tick-over will be heavy. For competition use, where mid-range power is important and road
use where the maximum power is required.

PHASE 4 (PH4) TARMAC RALLY SPRINT RACE CAMSHAFT
This camshaft is for competition use only and can be considered as a _ race cam. It could be used on the road, but would not be suitable
for use in traffic. It will have a very heavy tick-over and there will be a noticeable loss of power below 3500 rpm. Its main use is
for a torque race cam, giving a strong surge of power in the upper range power, yet still having the ability to floor the throttle below
5000 RPM and pull cleanly away. It will require modifications to the carb/injection system, cylinder head and induction exhaust system.

PHASE 5 (PH5) FULL RACE CAMSHAFT
For race use only. Not suitable for road or rally use,. Little power below 5000 RPM . Will have virtually no idle and will require
carb/injection, exhaust/induction., cylinder head and engine management modifications.

All that ive just copied from the newman cams website, you would be best going for the VTR PH3 with a re-map mate. Shame you didnt get in on the recent group buy they were only £130 :S

Nope silvertop engine mate, ring them to confirm 1st mate, they are pretty damn helpful so dont worry. But pretty sure you need silvertops.

If your looking to re-map anyways and youve got pretty good breathing mods already id go with the PH3s with a re-map. That will give u the best results overall as they are the last cams really that are decent for road use.

Have you not considered just dropping a VTS engine in mate??

Pretty sure it will be RR mate but when you speak to them im sure that they will be able to tell you that anyways :)

Edit: Silver top is RR and black top is Non RR :)

Edit again: Early mark 2 VTRs still have the non RR. Think its 2001 onwards that are RR (Thanks to VTRacer for that)

Im pretty positive all the 90bhp vtr engines are Non RR

A remap on its own is a good £300. So budget a bit more than that.

Alot of people go for PH3's. If you dont have much money go for the PH1's as you dont need a remap although it would benifit from one.

I meant looking to spend around 300 on the cams mate not both cams and remap
