To get the max bhp out of a VTR? Your talking lots and lots and lots of money. It's a bit silly to try and get the max bhp out of a VTR engine, when you can get an instant 22-30bhp from just a VTS Engine.
You've got a couple of choices really.
1) Get some headwork, Cams, Manifold, Decat and consider Throttle bodies on the VTR Engine, maybe taking you to about 135-140bhp on a decent TB setup, and your talking probably £4-5000 for all that. I'm no real engine expert so I don't know how far you can take a VTR Engine after that, but I guess to get the max bhp out of it, your talking upwards of £15,000 in total costs, but I'm not sure If you mean the max or just until it no-longer becomes cost effective (most people stop at TB's, because after that your talking huge costs for minimal gains)
Or
2) Get a VTS Engine, which is 120bhp already. Get some Cams, and a remap, taking you to about 140-150bhp, costing at the very max about £2500 (incl. the costs of buying and fitting the VTS Engine).
Or
3) Go down the boost route, Supercharger or Turbo. Expect to pay at least £2,000 for a 'decent' basic kit, then If you want it profesionally fitted, almost that again I'd imagine. From boost your talking very high gains if you've got the £, but If your not considering uprated/forged internals etc, It's usually not worth it IMO.
Or
4) If you just want the VTR to be quicker, and not massively fast, then your induction, with a 4-2-1 Manifold, decat centre pipe, and backbox should let you see anywhere between 105-115bhp, and this will be pretty nippy.
It all depends on what you mean by 'Fast', what you use the car for, and how much money you've got to throw at it.

Sax_Dan!!! That has to be the best answer to a question iv seen on sax-p, clear and to the point!! Nice one :)
Nico_daniels, just like Dan said it all depends on what you mean by "fast". Ive seen a fair few engine modded saxo's and i honestly say go down the VTS route first. Firstly it will add 30bhp straight of to your MK1 VTR which trust me makes a bigger difference than it sounds. Then modfications you apply to your VTS will make a MUCH bigger diference in bhp gains than if applied to your VTR. End of day its your choice, but if it were me id VTS it and then start engine modding from there. Tabz

Well I suppose it beats the usual 'Do a Search' that most people come out with. :boxing:
Nico_daniels - If you want my advice, the engine, albeit arguably the most important part of the car isn't the ONLY part. Don't neglect things like the suspension, brakes etc.
The rule of thumb when it comes to performance upgrades, is do things evenly. You see a prime example in the Muscle vs Jap Car feud.
You have huge amounts of power in the muscle cars, which great, down the drag strip is all well and good, but as soon as you include corners, or places where they have to brake, the well-rounded (but less powerful) jap cars dick on them.
In the same way (although not quite as extreme) spending £1,000s of pounds on your engine, and keeping the standard suspension is the same sort of thing. I think most people on here that know anything about creating a fast car will back me up in saying that a well-balanced saxo with a decent suspension setup running about 150bhp, will beat any 200bhp Turbo'd Saxo running standard shocks and springs, standard brakes etc around a track every day of the week. Especially if the less powerful car is track orientated and lighter.

..... WOW, that was the best advice, thanks!! Well my car is on spax dampers and springs, lowered 40mm aswell so i havnt forgot about those things but i dont want to strip it because i also want it to look good but i have thought about the turbo option but looking at it i might go for the vts converson, just need a good vts engine! But again thanks guys!!
